The man goes to two high school reunions. That, alone, has to put him in crazy territory.

re: What is the board's general consensus on Tom Fitzmorris?

He's really knowledgeable about old school New Orleans dining. I've read a couple of his books, and they were very good.

He can be a pompous arse to people who call into his show.

And although I don't agree with a food critic selling advertising, I'm not so sure that he's biased. Andrea's is a big advertiser with him, and I've seen him give him not so good reviews after eat club dinners there.

I've been to a couple of his eat club dinners, and had a good time. Not because he was there, but because it was a great dinner, amazing value, and I met other foodies.

I tend to think he's behind the times with always suggesting the same places, and it seems that he doesn't get out enough and try new places.

I was on his old message board for years and was always entertained.

With all of that being said, after one incident, I don't trust his reviews anymore. There was a restaurant that had been open maybe a month or so. He put it on one of his top top 10 lists (not positive which one it was...but I'm almost positive it was burgers) with a little blurb about how good it was. I was very surprised because one of his huge rules is not to go to a restaurant until it's been open for 6 months. I sent him an email inquiring about it. He'd either broken his rule, or he didn't eat there. He admitted to me he had not been to the restaurant and that his daughter had been and said it was good and he trusted her opinion. That's fine and great that he trusts his daughter's opinion, BUT he's a food critic and representing his reviews and opinions as his own. I don't go to his site to see what his 15 year old daughter thinks...especially when it's not noted that the opinion is hers, and he didn't even eat there. I go to read his opinion.

To me, that just really skated the line of honesty and rubbed me the wrong way. I never viewed him the same after that.

I agree with you, reviewing a place you haven't been is reprehensible.

But, it was a "burger place". I don't think of burger joints in the same way as a full service restaurant. That's just my opinion.

Who seeks out expert burger advice?

His policy re: 6 mo until trying, I think it's ridiculous. It's all about managing your expectations at a new place. I've been to Peche 5x, I assume he still hasn't been.

You wanna do a search and see how many best burger posts have been started on here?

It wasn't a burger place. It was a well known, new restaurant that happened to serve a burger.

But regardless...I don't care if it was Bud's Broiler, as a food critic, you don't represent your opinion as your own when it's that of your 15 yr. old daughter. PERIOD

That only advances my point.

I really think he just uses this little ploy to agitate people to get them to call in. It's his rule, until he decides it's not his rule. He will talk about the 6 month rule over and over, then when someone questions him about why he went somewhere earlier than that, he says it's just a guideline and doesn't need to be a firm rule.

Let Vicki Baily open a place and he will be there a week after it opens.

No shite!

How many times is that place going to change? How does she maintain a positive rep?

Cause she is a cougar!!

I think she is finally out of the ownership role of any restaurants. Nothings in the last 10 years seems to have worked all that well, but she keeps showing up.
As of now, I think she is just the front of the house person(or some role like that) for the place that took over Mikes on the Avenue.

This guy sounds like the Richard Condon sports guy in BR (sp?) , just a foodie version.

I can see the point of it. Some places are just very inconsistent in the beginning and it takes them a little bit of time to work out the kinks. You use Ba Chi as an example. Go read their Yelp reviews. Very bad service issues in the beginning. Now they seem to be doing fine. I dined at Kingfish recently and found it to be pretty bad, although one friend had a great experience. Their reviews are up and down as well, because they're new. While I think 6 months is unnecessary to wait, I try to not go to a new restaurant until it's been open a couple of months.

Good example.

That was my experience at the soft opening.

I've been twice since then. It's great. I think it's a matter of managing expectations. If you know a place is new, you should expect and handle growing pains with service and perhaps food. I didn't care the service was slow at a Vietnamese place. The food was great which certainly warranted a return trip. I posted my review on these pages.

If someone can't dine at a restaurant without some perspective then they shouldn't try a new place within 6 months.

I still don't get what was so awful to warrant a such a goofy arse youtube "retort."

And I'm generally in the camp of thinking Tom is a huge douche.

I agree to a certain degree. There are just too many great places to eat in Nola to have to "manage my expectations" when dining out. I'd rather just wait until they've been open for a bit and I see that the reviews are consistent before trying it. I made a mistake by not doing that with Kingfish and my experience reminded me of why I try not to go to a new place too soon.

I agree, lots of great options.

That's fine, I'm not that patient. Plus, I'm fine with a little uncertainty while dining. It's just an experience with failure being a possibility.

Kingfish's menu didn't really grab me. Looks overpriced.
