I'm not talking Ruger Blackhawks here.

Saturday was the opening day of trapping season for falconer's here in AL. We went out hoping to get two hawks - one for me, and one for my fellow apprentice here in town. The catch is, we're only allowed to keep birds that hatched this year. You can tell by their plumage if they're first year birds. We saw lots of older hawks and finally caught a keeper for my friend around lunch time. Unfortunately, I had to start heading home by about 3:30pm and we were running out of time. We finally spotted another young hawk around 3:00, and the gods were smiling on us, because he came straight to the trap. We got him outfitted and I was on the road home. I skidded into the driveway with just enough time to get dressed for a wedding.

Here's my little guy, "Josey Wales."

This is the coolest thing. Trapping a hawk in order to train them to hunt. Just crazy. So, how do you trap one?

There are various ways. I'd rather not post them on a public forum that isn't dedicated to falconry. There are a lot of yahoos out there that might think it would be fun to go try and that's not safe for them OR the birds. It's also HIGHLY illegal without all the proper licensing.

I will say it's a lot of fun though.

The information is out there for anybody that is interested enough to hunt for it. I just don't want to be the one spreading it around the internet where just anybody can come across it.

We dress up in medieval costumes and play with hawks and sword fight and stuff.

Kidding. We use them for hunting. I'll be chasing rabbits and squirrels with this one.

I have heard of people taking ducks with trained hawks before. I bet it would be pretty wild to watch a trained hawk go after a big body of snow geese on the ground.

Do they catch the small game and bring it back to you? Do they kill it then you go get it?

I obviously have no idea how falconing works.
