The quote I received today along with the low hurricane deductible has me worried/skeptical. Any opinions on them?

Good company until you have been with them a year and they hike your insurance by 20%.
Check out Occidental insurance.

ASI lost all my respect today, but then gained it back.

They are a "pretty good" company, trying to become a "good" company. They just had their AM Best rating upgraded from A- ("Good") to A ("Excellent"). They don't cover other structures on the premises that are not of like construction (fences, sheds, awnings, patio covers, etc) for wind damage.

I wouldn't write someone I hate with Occidental.

How old is your home and who is it insured with now?

If it is built pre-1990 I wouldn't cancel your current policy until it is through underwriting. They, like all the new, smaller companies to Louisiana, are pretty strict on underwriting and brutal on older homes.

I have my homeowners through ASI here in Metairie. I've never had a claim, so can't say what that process is like. My premium has increased 20% since I bought the policy in Sept 2009.

Brand new construction. Closing beginning of next month.I got a quote from allstate that was through occidental. About $400 more a month with $9,000 hurricane deductIble. ASI's was $1,000. Sounds too good to be true.

I have had my HOI with them for 3 years.

Year 1: $1100
Year 2: $1190
Year 3: $1330
Year 4 statement I just got: $1610

I called them and asked WTF. They keep raising the The value of my home saying its worth 225K. It started year 1 at 193K. They agreed to revert it to year 2 which was 200k.

Never made a claim but I'm happy with tjem

I don't know anyone's particulars, but I've been pretty successful at getting ASI to both reduce coverage amounts that they seem to arbitrarily raise each year, and also I've been able to get coverage for the estimated replacement cost of my house. For instance, if you pay $200K for your house, it's really unlikely that you'll need $200K worth of insurance to rebuild it assuming that's close to appraised value. The cost of the land is also included in the purchase price. It's definitely worthwhile trying to get coverage written for your estimated replacement cost.

Call your agent. They should be able to lower the coverage back. The premium will not go all the way back down but it will go down some. When they started writing (especially the NS area) they were way too cheap. They are trying to get their rates right.

New construction plus high credit is exactly what ASI wants and they are dirt cheap on it.

Their policy has a few minor "holes" and claim service may lag behind SF a little but you make up for that with the premium savings and low deductible.

I have never seen a company more unorganized with worse processing and underwriting. They are terrible (at least from the agents perspective). They may be okay from the customer side, but I would be surprised. If you are already through underwriting and the premium is paid through escrow you will probably never have a hiccup with them.

I didn't write enough with them to see how their claim service is.

Thanks for the info, I switched to occidental b/c ASI was going to cost me 3400 for the year even though I really liked the hurricane deductible of 1k since I live less than 1/2 mile from the lake in mandeville...
My occidental policy was 2k for the year and same coverage except for a hurricane deductible of 7k.. House is new construction finished in 2010. So far my gamble as paid off, no damage at all for Isaac ( I cut down all my trees)

All insurance companies have had rate hikes the past 2 years. ASI isn't the only one. And ASI's rates were too cheap two years ago.

i rather gamble than pay an extra 1400 yearly, besides its not like the 7k deductible will send me to the poor house anyways..

Should have had ASI quote increased to equivalent deductibles to see true price difference. In any case, frick Occidental. I hope you have nothing but a horrible experience. GOod Luck.
