Advice needed, I am new to timber hunting ducks but woul dliek to try it out this year. We have a large place in the basin with a good amount of ducks towards the 2nd split. I know you need to find an opening in the timber with water, but is their other things to look for in a good duck hole? Is there any reason some holes are better than others?

The reason I ask is becuase about half of our place will be holding water by end of december. How do I pick one hole over the other? (Besides watching for ducks)

Ducks typically use the timber to rest and hide. Look for a hole with a nice opening.

The main thing to look for is a hole that has water that goes out into the trees. They will only land in the open water, then swim off into the trees to hide.

Lastly, the timber we hunt doesn't get good till later in the day once the ducks leave the fields, so don't give up early.

is the shite

how many acres is flooded? You like to find a good hole in the trees, as well as one on the water. Go out a few days before your hunt, and see where the ducks are getting up from. I like to hunt with the wind in my face, so the ducks will commit from behind me. That way you buddys shiny face wont flare them. Also hunt facing the West if possible, so your buddys shiny face wont flare them.

Personally, I like newly hunted areas. I want some place that has plenty of acorns under the water or right out of the water. If a place stays flooded all year, it will kill the trees and then no acorns.

Pick the hole that has lots of corn under the water surface.

Its primary a deer lease, but a few guys will duck hunt occiasionally. Its 20,000 acres, which last year about half was under water by end of december. So their will be so much flooded timber. Last year I saw wood ducks everywhere you went. But the big ducks didn't come down till end of the year. I think they feed over in the rice fields norht of Krotz Springs then head back over. Just not sure where to set up if the majority of the place has water and acorns. I guess I will look for larger openings.

You got some good tips so far...

I'd add that when you scout the birds may not be there right then. So if you don't jump any birds always be looking for feathers on the water. If they're using the area, you can bet they'll be preening.

It's a dead give away.
