Pre-1964 Winchester is still awesome. The late 60's and 70's seem to be a really bad time for gunmakers. The recession then hurt them badly. This recent recession has helped gunmakers, though. Strange how times change.

I looked at them for my son but got a great deal on a close out Marlin.

I saw them for a bit less than that on Gunbroker. No sales tax, of course, but you still have to fork over a FFL transfer fee and shipping. Probably a wash. These were a combo with a Hogue youth stock and an adult stock thrown in too. It also had a low-end scope thrown in the "combo package." I want to fondle one before I buy though, so I may head to the gun store this weekend and check it out.

i'm pulling my monarch off my tikka and putting that on my son's new marlin and I just bought me a new Meopta Meostar (giggity)
The marlin and weatherby are both heavy (helps with recoil) and have a flat bottom forearm.
look for a rifle by its self and then look on ebay for a scope.. a lot of great deals can be found for new scopes.

i just "fondled" one here. felt pretty sweet; but in the $600 range here. i'm likely going to go with the remington 700 7mm/08 as that seems to be the prevailling suggestion. of the first 3 mentioned in the original post, the consensus seemed to be the savage, but some poster said not to get the savage axis, although i could not elicit any specific reasons.

I've got a Cabela's Alaskan Guide scope I am thinking about putting on it. Best cheap scope I've ever used. Daddy keeps the Leupolds. Young eyes gather more light anyway.

Well, the triggers on the new 700's are a HUGE step up from the old ones. As far as accuracy is concerned though, we've had better luck with the old ones so far. Only got one of the new ones though and haven't gotten deep enough into it yet to make a fair comparison.
I will say this though. The old one's will outshoot 99% of the people that shoot them. Not that I don't expect that to be the case with the new ones... The design is timeless.

I have a 60's model 700 in aught-six that is one of the most consistently accurate rifles I've ever shot. I have no experience with the new ones. I may hunt with that gun again this fall for old time's sake.

My uncle has an early 80's 700 in aught 6 that's been glass bedded in an aftermarket stock and a nice little trigger job on it. I've been trying like hell to get my grimy little hands on it.

I've got a laminated (salt & pepper) stock that's been bedded on mine. The rifle looks new, but it is older than I am by several years.

I had a Howa M1500, although was probably about 15 years ago. For many years, Howas has made bolt action rifles and put someone else's name on it. I know that in times past they've done this w/ Smith and Wesson, Marlin and Weatherby Vanguard; not sure if they still make the Vanguard or not. My Howa was a 30-06. It was extremely accurate. Trigger was easily adjustable. Their prices are very attractive on new guns. If things haven't changed it should be a solid gun.
