We aren't the only ones having the Band vs. Canned Music debate.

It has been a big topic here, and deservedly so. But we are not the only ones who have "over-corporatized" our stadium atmosphere, thereby shutting out the band. I have linked a few good articles below to sample other big time college football venues. The first article below focuses specifically on how marketing has basically killed one basketball pep band. Just some food for thought...

Written in 2004, but very relevant concerning Louisville's basketball band

Notre Dame...letter to editor of local publication

Michigan

Penn State....article written last year before Paterno scandal...so ignore 1st paragraph!!

Doesn't matter. TGBFTL isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

I understand this. The point of the articles is that we are not the only ones who are playing garbage music over the speakers and taking time away from the band.

Yep. Some of the music they played really raised some eyebrows. They don't even pick GOOD canned music.

Given, we need a break every now and then, but there were times when we were about to play and the media guy tells us no, they had 3 PAs to do first.

Have any of those schools banned one of their team's long storied songs because some students might say a potty word if it gets played?

I don't get the infatuation with having the band play all the music. They have their moments, it's cool that they're really good, but they play some stupid shite too. If the douche picking the piped in stuff ever managed to play something that was good/made sense in context, people wouldn't hate it so much. Seriously how hard is it to pick a song/soundbite that can pump up the crowd? Whoever does it sucks balls.

They didn't ban it for a dirty word, they banned it cuz it's so stupid, and makes our fans sound like choads.

I was at the game Saturday and as for me .... I vote against Canned Music. I want more Band music. They even canned the Tiger Rag song when the Band just played it live. I think the canned music affected the players as well, they seemed to be overly canned on several plays.

How long have you guys been subject to the whim of the marketing department? I don't recall it always being this way. Pretty soon all y'all will be able to play are advertising jingles to promote sponsors.

On a related note, who selects the canned music that is piped in? It's god awful stuff.

This is a nation wide trend that started in the last 5-6 years.

I hope they're not as bad at the rest of their responsibilities as they are at selecting music.

I assume that each school decides for themselves how much or how little control they let their marketing departments have.

I bet these are the same guys that were behind the infamous "let's sing happy birthday to the LA Lottery" debacle that happened years ago. I've never seen so many people boo so loudly at something that didn't happen on the field.

Edit: Are these the same people that brought us the Toonces logo and Ellis Hugh?

That was the most embarrassing thing ive ever seen in Tiger Stadium. I was there for that too, that was the game against Houston, that Kevin Faulk practically single handedly brought us back from an upset.

The people responsible for that are long gone from LSU. If anyone has an issue with what the marketing department does, why not send them an email? Shouldn't be hard to find on LSUSports.net. Apparently people like Herb Vincent answer emails from Rantards.....errr...fans all the time, so I don't see why an marketing person couldn't do the same.

Pretty much.

I do remember, at last year's Tennessee game, being jealous that they barely had any PA's at all! Given, I couldn't really hear their band that well even though they're mic'ed, but it must be nice having more freedom to play....
