Question about buying a car

My girlfriend asked me this question and I didn't quite have an answer. She got in a wreck and is getting a check from the insurance company on Monday or Tuesday.
The question she asked is whether or not she should wait until the storm blows over before she buys her car.
Any advice is appreciated
No pics btw

Do you need a car for evacuation reasons? Then get the car. Are you thinking you might get a deal after the storm?

It probably doesn't matter much.
Think of it this way - sure, she might wind up paying next to nothing for a car that is heavily damaged. Is that really a good deal?

I didn't think it really mattered, but I wasn't 100% sure.

Is she thinking in terms of buying a car, having it damaged by Isaac and having to go through this all over again?
We bought the car that I currently drive new in August of 2005 while we were living in Baton Rouge. It survived Katrina only to take on water all the way up to the seats a month later during Rita.
State Farm deemed it a total loss and paid us up to salvage value. We came up with a couple thousand more to pay off the note and have driven it ever since with no issues.
Probably not extremely helpful, but based on my anecdotal CSB, I would say she should get the car.

I say wait-- after the hurricane, people will be looking to spend money on something else other than a car-- such as damaged property. If their car is damaged, they will be waiting on insurance. Very possible you could get a good deal.
Also, your car won't get damaged during the hurricane. So win/win.

I remember about 2 days before Katrina hit no insurance companies were writing new policies. Could not get insurance at all. Of course if someone is trading in they have automatic insurance for 30 days.

Another thing to consider: this may have an impact on oil prices. If gas goes to $4/gal or more it'll be tough to sell SUV's and trucks. You may have more negotiating room (not that gas prices aren't already sky high).

After Katrina, used car lots in Baton Rouge were empty. I had to help a friend find a used Trailblazer.....he got what I'd consider a terrible deal under normal circumstances, but he needed something with four wheel drive and needed it quickly. The pickings were very slim.
He still has that truck today now that I think about it.
I don't think this storm will flood thousands of cars....but it may be better to wait a few weeks for supply to return to normal. I'm sure you'll see hail damage and other issues.
