I'd have to go with either Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams or In the Airplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel.

ETA: Neutral Milk Hotel

Oh My Sweet Carolina by Ryan Adams off Heartbreaker

Yeah by far his best, it's raw and gritty. He's starting to suck now that he's with Mandy Moore. fricking Mandy Moore, screwing up good music.

Aeroplane (my avatar) is pretty popular on this board, although yeah, not very well known amongst the general public.

Emergency and I by the Dismemberment Plan is pretty overlooked imo. Rarely even mentioned around these parts.

She's so sweet though. His last was decent.

But heartbreaker was the best. I liked rock and roll too.

The band being from Louisiana, I would expect a few more people here to know, but then again that scene and that generation has been transcended. I dig the new indie scene, but it's no longer the garage feel. Everyone has access to studios and computer synthesizers now.

Quicksilver Messenger Service- Happy Trails

A lot of jam band fans would probably enjoy said album immensely. They are a band out of San Francisco from the Woodstock era. Contemporaries of the Dead, although they didn't enjoy the same commercial success.

The Moody Blues- On the Threshold of a Dream

I made a thread about these guys last week. Although they were considerably successful, you don't hear too much about them in modern times. I'm 20 and have never met anyone my age who listens to them. There are some obvious differences both in technical composition and mood, but fans of Floyd might enjoy them.

Radio Moscow- Radio Moscow

They don't have their full album on youtube. But they were produced by the Black Keys after their lead man gave Auerbach a demo after one of their shows. Quality blues rock band.

Hard question... there are so many out there...

For instance, most of my friends would rate the two records you listed very highly...

Richard and Linda Thompson- Shoot Out the Lights

Rolling Stone has it in the top 100 but not many copies sold.

Yeah within certain musically inclined circles most people will know these albums. But to the average person, not many know who those bands are. I mean the one problem with discussing bands any more removed is that when you start talking about albums that not even people in the scene are all listening to, you are talking about an album that almost nobody is listening to if you can follow me haha.

If you have actual records, I am highly impressed. An old friend of mine use to play records in the winter while we chilled and drank beer outside. It was an awesome experience.

I should have said music collection, there is some in all formats. Although I do have records, I very rarely actually play them these days.
