Pretty damn small for a .45 ACP. I included my full size XD .45 w/ 5 inch tactical barrel for size comparison.

I know what they are, pictures were just a light too fuzzy for me. Shoot it yet? Make sure to lock the slide back, insert mag, then drop the slide when loading, seems to be the best way to ensure the slid/striker assembly go fully into battery.

Haven't had the chance yet. Thanks for the tip, I noticed it was a bit catchy when racking the first round. A little oil fixed that though.

Nice looking pistols. I have the full size .45 in olive drab. Saving my pennies for the XDS. Went and handled one at the shop last weekend. Loved it top to bottom. Congrats!

Think I may have a similar issue with new Shield also. Had a few FTF/Slide lockup problems after loading a new mag. I'll try that remedy next time

This is also the best way to break it in and assure that it is functioning properly. When you rack the first round in by hand you run the risk of short-stroking the action, thus causing a hangup. This is why people suggest to carry condition 1 if you carry that concealed. For those who don't know, condition 1 is one in the chamber, full magazine, safety off (if the gun has one, which this one doesn't).

I was surprised at how little felt recoil there is out of the XDs. A guy at the range had one and it was a pretty slick piece. Good purchase!

When it comes to single-stack CCW guns, the XDs and M&P Shield have been taking the market by storm.

If it has the 'floating' striker design, it very well could be

They certainly are, if SA hadn't screwed the pooch on the XD-S release I really don't think you would have heard much about the Shields, but they got to market sooner and had plenty of momentum before the XD-S made it into stores. My friend bought the one I was fondling at my LGS, so as soon as the sonofabitch lets me shoot it, I probably won't be able to resist trying to sell my 3.8" 9mm.

Please do this. I have the XDM in .40 and .45, both in full size, and have been considering the subcompact to replace/complement my LCR as my CCW.

Have shot the compact glock .40, and it is a fantastic little peice, and i dont expect less from and XD.

Well this is when it starts to get a little hairy. A subcompact Glock .40 (which I believe is a 26? Could be wrong) is a double stack design. It's like holding a 2x4 and is VERY wide. The height and length are short, so it's good there, but it has more of a chance of printing due to its width.

The XDs and M&P Shield are both single-stack pistols. They may have the same height and length dimensions (or a bit longer and higher) but the width is much much lower. Width is the most important aspect of concealed carry. This is why so many older guys insist on carrying a 2.5lb 1911. Not because it shoots .45, but because it's very thin.

Hold a few in your hands and see which one is thin enough before you make a decision. The more comfortable it is, the more you'll carry it. A gun left at home is worthless.

will give it a shot. I generally like double stack pistols because have very large hand, but the trade off is concealment. I am a fan of the lightweight pistols for CCW, but then again, if its light, and doesnt perform worth a flip for CCW, then its about as useful as a keychain. the compact 1911 is a very good option due to its size/profile.

Thanks!

If you want a gun that's readily available and extremely overlooked and underrated, I would suggest the Kahr CM9. It's my carry piece and has never failed in over 3000+ rounds. This includes factory loads, hollow points, and handloads. I trust my life with it.

It's a single stack 6-rd (flush fit) or 7 round (extended) 9mm single-stack subcompact.

If you check at Jim's ( ) you can see their Kahr selection. The PM9 has the exact same dimensions as the CM9 but costs more. So if they only have the PM9 then you'll know what you're buying.

I will say in comparison to the XDs and Shield that they both have better triggers than my Kahr. My CM9 has a smooth trigger but it is very long and has a long reset (it's like a revolver trigger). It works though and it makes me feel good every time I shoot it at the range because it just works and works.

I ordered my CM9 on Bud's and got it transferred to LA Gun and Reloading off Old Jefferson. I got it for $398 off Bud's and paid 20 bucks for the transfer. One hell of a deal if you ask me.

EDIT: If you want something for pocket carry, Kahr also has the P380 that has similar dimensions to the popular LCP. They also make a CM40 if you want to step up in caliber.

Kahr has been making single-stack pistols for a long time. They definitely know what they're doing.

Too add to what bapple said, the XDm 40/45 SC are both double stacks 13/10 rounds respectively. The XD-S is not labelled/marketed as a sub-compact.

Single stack CC handguns are really selling well nowdays w/ the Shield and XD-S being the newest versions. Bapple's right about the Kahr product line being very unappreciated. Although I don't have the CM9 he speaks of, I do have a Kahr CW45. For you guys who are considering a single stack 45 ACP, don't forget the CCW45. Dimensionally, it's similar to the XD-S, but costs less. As Bapple described, the trigger is more like a DAO revolver. Although I really like my 1911's, I'm carrying the CW45 more and more, espcially because it's so much lighter. I picked mine up on sale a while back for approx $355, including transfer fee. In addition, many, but not all, of the magazines for a 1911 Officer model (7 round capacity as compred to the usual Kahr factory 6 round capacity) will also function in the CW45.
