I want to take my son fishing for some reds. What would be the safest area within a resonable drive (2hrs) of Baton Rouge to do this in a 17.7 bass boat. I'm new down here and only have a bass boat and no funds to buy a bay boat

Falgoust Canal Marina in Dularge (Theriot). Straight Shot (5 Mins) from the Marina to the Lake Decade. Several Canals you can hit as well. Fish the north bank with your trolling motor

Plus you can catch bass, Flounder, etc in the same spots. Nice trout in there too during the fall/winter

Hopedale/Delecroix. ~2.5 hours from BR. Not sure about due south from BR though

Dularge for sure.

You can head down Bayou Decade and find reds in the side canals/marsh. And if that doesn't work, head further inshore and you can catch some bass too.

Pointe Aux Chenes is a little over 2 hrs. Lake de Cade is good too.

Used to fish Golden Meadow in a 15' Ouachita bass boat. Nothing to it!

reason??

I've fished hopdale a bit with a friend during my college years down here I think we put in at campos marina. I also have a Lowrace elite gps unit so I can track my way around. Thanks for y'alls input. Maybe I need to stick with white perch and bass

didn't say that man just need to pop your saltwater cherry in a little less dangerous place. Delacroix will frick with you hard if you don't go out with someone who knows the area to familiarize yourself. Some really shallow areas and underwater obstacles toward Oak river.

honestly, the safest place I would recommend you try is the Leeville/catfishlake area.

That or the Bayou Blue/Point Au Chens area.
Real safe boating in these areas and the fishing is decent.

Where are the obstacles at? I missed a turn once going to oak river and wound up 2 blocks into the shallows, luckily I was able to get out with the trolling motor.

You're welcome. You probably were able to get out by following the dredged area I created when I had to get my boat out of the same area when I did the same thing a few years ago.

This would be your best option. You can catch all the redfish you want about 100 yards from the marina.

i learned the hardway lol.....but this time of year can be VERY productive for reds and bass like 10 minutes from the landing in Delacroix
