I read a ton of these books in grade school. Most of the time I tried to think up ways the person who was caught could explain themselves out after Brown caught them.

Damn. I had forgotten all about those books. I read at least 20 of them and saw the HBO movie. I even figured a few of them out.

Wow, those were required reading when you went to the library as a class.
You know what's really crazy?
Beverly Cleary is STILL ALIVE!
They probably still read her stuff in grade school. The author of three generations of kids.

I tried to get my daughter to read the Encyclopedia Brown books a few years ago because I liked them so much as a kid. They didn't hold up very well, much like the Andy Griffith Show.

I'd take a close look at Bugs Meany's alibi.

They had a formula basically. the first story he would help his dad with a case and solve it. Then he would bust Bugs Meany (worst name ever for an antogonist) a few times. Then there was the kid who was always trying to con others out of money.
