Got cut from work early last night, and stopped at Koto to ease my Snow Crab Salad craving. I enjoy eating sushi from time to time, but much like any other food, I like the apps even better than my entree. What are your favorite apps to get at sushi joints?

Obviously, Snow Crab Salad for me. Love a good cold cucumber salad or seafood salad. Sometimes do a Seaweed Salad too.

Yummy!!

(Recently realized this is just imitation crab and Japanese mayo. I'll be at the Oriental Foods on Lee very soon for that!)

Edemame and may be a cucumber salad. This sushi place i go to with my folks in nj makes this amazing app. No sure what is called, but its diced up tuna mixed with some avocado, mango and green onions then formed into a ball. Good stuff.

Hamachi Kama - Yellow tail collar, served best at Sushi Yama and there is absolutely no disputing that

Steak tataki - ichiban has the freshest

Snowcrab Naruto - I like yama's because their sauce is light. Ichiban has a good one also but sweeter. Dont like places where they put wasabi in the sweet mayo.

Salmon Sashimi plate - the best for your buck is at Sake Cafe (yes, sake cafe). The salmon is surprisingly fresh every time I've been and plentiful. Ichiban had a nice salmon sashimi platter but it's gotten smaller and smaller over the years.

Ankimo - Monkfish liver

Hamachi Kama - Yellow tail collar (as hidekidz noted ), although this could actually be an entree in itself. Not only is this one of my favorite sushi bar items, but it's a test to see if the restaurant purchases fresh whole hamachi. If there's no hamachi kama to be had, chances are they get their shite pre packaged.

Tako su - Octopus slices in vinaigrette.

LL, if you're ever in New Orleans in the Carrolton area, go there and get a roll or two ... they serve the salad i mentioned as a complimentary app. It's also on the menu, though. Whenever my wife and i go, i usually get an order to go. It's rice noodles, cucumber, sesame seeds, and a light mayo dressing, with a few other ingredients i can't think of, but it is awesome. Very light, and fresh.

Traditionally I'm an edamame fan.

There's a fushion sushi place near me that has a wasabi salsa (from what I can tell has tomato, avocado, mango, wasabi, jalapeno, red onion, and some other stuff) that they serve with homemade wonton chips that are

Places in nola have the baked salmon app. It's snow crab wrappd with salmon then baked with eel sauce and flying fish eggs. So good.

Some places serve a yellowtail jalapeno app. Thin slices of yellowtail topped with a thin slice of jalapeno with a yuzu sauce. They serve a variance of that dish at some places. Best place I see had it was in Houston.

I usually get the baked salmon, squid salad, edamame, if they have grilled calamari, or miso soup.

Kyotos in elmwood has a fried tiny crabs app that is a little weird but I like it.
