It is summer movie season and if you thought Hollywood had pulled out all the stops with 3-D and IMAX 3-D, think again. The 4-D movie experience could be coming soon to a theater near you. What is a 4-D movie? "It refers to physical effects that are coordinated with the images on the screen that involve your other senses," says media analyst and entertainment lawyer James Hirsen. "It is things like moving seats during a chase scene, the smell of gun powder when there is an explosion on the screen and during a spooky foggy scene you are surrounded by real fog." Hollywood has a history of using gimmicks to attract audiences. The 1960's movie "Scent of a Mystery" used Smell-O-Vision, spraying a variety of flavors, like the smell of flowers, throughout to help bring its viewer into the film. In 1974, "Earthquake" used specialty base speakers to shake the theater. The difference with 4-D is the use of advanced computer software technology to coordinate the effects and customized seats equipped with back, neck and leg ticklers, air blasts, and water sprayers. These 4-D movie theaters are all the rage in South Korea, Mexico and Thailand, care of the South Korean conglomerate CJ Group, the largest movie chain owner in Asia. The company currently operates nearly 30 4-D theaters in those countries and in the midst of finalizing a deal to bring 200 4-D theaters to the U.S. over the next five years. In 2011, total U.S. box office sales fell 4 percent from the previous year to $10.2 billion, according to the Motion Pictures Association of America. And while 3-D releases did rise last year, sales fell $400 million. Hirsen believes 4-D movies will get moviegoers excited again — at least for the younger generation — especially since it is becoming easier to stream movies and watch 3-D movies in the comfort of your own home. But the cost may be a sticking point. The cost of a 4-D ticket is expected to be $8 more than the current price of a 3-D movie ticket. CJ Group is currently testing its 4-D system in Los Angeles near the Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

There will probably be 20 4D theaters in America, if that. It won't become mainstream until the Singularity, which is needless to say a long way off.

The guy on the video said 200 theaters
I'm not paying an extra $8 added to the 3D fee.

shite. I already hate 3D movies. Why in the world would peole want 4D? I guess watching a regular flat screened movie with no other effects besides sound is overrated now.

I live in apartment 4-D. It's not worth the money.

I actually like those 4D experiences at theme parks, but those only last about 10 or 15 minutes. This is a different story. I guess I'd give it a try with the right movie. Sounds like it would be around $20? That's getting up there.

Like all new technology, it will be advanced by being adopted and improved by the porn industry.

Pretty soon the entire theater will move as a unit like a flight simulator ride. Of course everyone will be too distracted from the vibrating seats, flavored air, lighting effects, and misters to pay attention to the actors and plot, so they'll just do away with those. Of course, when that happens they won't need writers or directors anymore, but after they get rid of them they can use the money they save to make the movie theater unit move on a track. The track will take up so much room they'll have to take theater outside and narrow the seat rows a little, but hey it's all in the name of technology and progress. Ladies and gentlemen, the 11D amazing thrill theater of the future:

After seeing Muppets 4D at Disney I was waiting for more theaters to do this. Have heat on the audience's face during an explosion on screen, smells during a gross scene, chill the room in a winter scene, etc.

For those who haven't been, the National WWII Museum in Nola offers a 4D show that runs every hour on the hour. It's badass!

Do not want my movie experience to include being sprayed with water and funky stench wafting over me.

A whole full length movie in 4-D would be difficult to create with quality in my opinion. Maybe something like Avatar would work but I feel the 4-D qualities would ruin the movie in itself. Either way though, I'll probably check one out at some point.

Disney does a hell if a job with their 4D movies but the repair cost for a system like that must be high. See Soarin' or Philharmagic for examples.

My problem isn't price so much as while I think it works great for Disney short films, a full feature film might be overkill. I really don't want to get sprayed with water 15 times over the course of a 2 hour movie. In the hot Orlando sun, getting sprayed is OK.

Let's work on the quality of the 2-D movies we're releasing before we start pushing even more bells and whistles.
