re: Have you ever Toy Scalped?

If you engage in a traditionally nerd hobby, you've got to have a thick skin. I collect old (30's vintage) toy trains, which makes everyone picture some guy with taped up eyeglasses, pocket pen protector, a star trek shirt and plaid pants.

Take the lumps. shite is as it is.

I did have Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker come into my office during the filming of the Great Debaters to check out my trains.

Grow up. There's nothing at all wrong with selling something for what the market will bear.

Yeah, toy companies are in it for charity and warm fuzzy feelings.

re: Have you ever Toy Scalped?

about 8 years ago CVS had some $25 George Bush talking dolls on sale for some reason, %50 off then like an extra %25 off that so I only paid like $7.50 and bought one.

Well I went home and looked on ebay and apparently they were really popular and hard to find and people were getting $30-40 for them online...so I quickly drove back and bought all 15 or so left at CVS (check out person thought I was crazy) and ended up getting at least 30 for all of them

I bought a Dark Knight Joker figure that was recalled for being too scary for kids when the movie came out. Sold it for $120 after paying maybe $15 a couple weeks later.

he priced them to the market, maybe below if in fact he sold them all that quickly.

Exactly what I did, I priced the about $10 lower than what they were selling for on eBay with a Buy It Now of $90. Most were sold in multiples to businesses or other scalpers thinking the value would go up.

I don't go around toy departments looking for toys to scalpe, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

I use to have a vintage and new toy collection and I know Hot Wheels are the most scalped toy out there. I never understood why collectors have to have the Treasure Hunt as soon as it comes out, paying $50+ dollars for a $1 toy, when they can wait and get it for under $10 when the next one is released.

Doubled up on a couple xbox360's, 3 PS3's, and at least 7 Wii's in their hayday.

Yep, and I'd do it again.

There's enough parents whose little darlings just "have" to have the hot toy in time for Christmas that toy scalping is a very successful venture.

Personally, my kids have been taught the value of waiting til something goes on sale after the holidays.

At what percentage do you make the transition from being honorable to being scum? 5%? 10%? 25%? 50%? 100%? 250%?

Just curious.

WTF? It's eBay ... no one is forcing bidders to pay a certain price. Bidders decide what it's worth to them and bid accordingly.

My wife wanted to keep it for the kid's Christmas and I sad - Sell it. Well, it is still here in a closet somewhere, well used, and forgotten. C'est l'avi! And.....

I very much wanted to, at the least, ram their carts with mine and grab their stuff. At most, maybe give them a permanent reminder of why they're scum.

Yeah nothing screams class like wanting to ram your cart into another shopper's and stealing the stuff out of his basket, in the middle of a Wal Mart.

The original TMX I bought off eBay before I found the 24 is still in the box in my closet. It has "Top Secret" across the box, the 24 I bought had "Do Not Open" on them. They called it top secret because only a handful of people saw the toy before it was released. I did open it to remove the batteries, but ever took it out of the box.
