Has anyone ever used DNS to negotiate debt settlement? What are the pro's and cons?

It worked for my parents.
Got most of their interest rates down to 1 to 3% from the mid teens.
Only company that didn't budge was discover.
(They tried themselves before without any luck.)
They started 5 and a half years ago and are debt free as of January 2012. They were 170k in debt. Couldn't be more proud of them. They worked 4 jobs.
