yep...just try to float/relax, swim with the current (elementary backstroke probably the easiest) and then go parallel to the coast. Lots of times the surf will actually push you back in.

My family was vacationing down there and actually watched it all happen from the balcony. My pops said there were two, and the kid made it in safe. The adult kept getting taken further and further out, the waves hitting him hard and sucking him down, then he went down one last time and didn't come back up. Sad stuff ruined the family vacation to say the least. Well both families I guess.

That would have been awful to actually see the son unsuccessfully trying to pull his father out of the ocean. You may have been the last person to see this guy before he went underwater for good.

I'm staying at Turquoise Place too. A lifeguard brigade just went by searching in the water for the guy. They stayed in a line, and would all go under, look a bit, then resurface. Didn't find anything.
By the way, clear blue skies, small waves and the beach looks normal again. Water still looks dirty though.

mike76, which condo were they staying at? Just curious. I just left Orange Beach a couple days ago and though I didn't get in very deep at all, you could feel the pull of the water more than I can remember. Very sad.

between the first and second sandbars is a hell of a riptide at that place. even on calm days it will drag you down the beach. all the locals surf up and out along the pier and bail before you get in between the the bars. You have to stay out along the end of the pier there. Also there is rebar under the water from the old pier. I grew up there surfing as a kid and young adult. We named it schoolbus because we could see if the waves were breaking from the schoolbus.

That's some sad stuff... How have the jellyfish been around gulf shores this summer? I haven't been yet but it seems like every year they get worse.

hit and miss on the jellies. My oldest son just got back from Hawaii. He said it was killer surfing there even though it is the off season for it.
