there is a canal that runs through our hunting lease and wanted to try to catch turtles. i've never done it before and need some advice/tips. i would like to try without traps first then maybe purchase some later if i think it would be worth it, but if using traps is the best way to do it and they are not very expensive i will try it.

help me out!

why you wanna catch em? You should probably just watch animal planet and nat geo for a couple days and that'll teach you all you need to know.

I think the Turtleman from Kentucky just walked around in the water til he felt them under his feet. Then he would pick them up and throw them on the bank

ride around the country when they're draining rice fields, you've never seen a coonass hit the brakes faster than when he sees a snapping turtle crossing the road

I almost got into a fist fight over a big softshell crossing the road.

I've seen 2 men argue on the side of the road about a turtle. Pretty damn awesome

Live buffalo is the best, cut bait if you can't find it. Stake a trot to the bank with a weight on the end. Don't be afraid to throw it in the trash. Them big turtles love it.

Im thinking soap or beef jerky hanging above the water will be lights out for turtles

You are right about a coonass and brakes – was headed to the Atch towing a 20’ boat when we spotted a nice snapper crossing the road … The coonass with me – yells stop stop so I layed on the brakes trying not to jack knife the trailer – I stop and coonass takes off out of truck like a spotted ape back to turtle. Too late … a Nissan sentra (not towing a boat) stops a lot faster and coonass w/o teeth stepped out grabs the 50+lb turtle and tosses it in the trunk and takes off. My coonass comes back and looks like someone just ran over his dog ….. he looks at me and says “man dat sucks – it was a nice turtle – no way I can tell my daddy bout dis he would be pissed” – he also thought I should have stopped faster. I probably could have but must admit that stopping for turtles was not part of my growing up so I was a little slow. BTW he and his daddy made a kick a** sauce picante so I was disappointed we missed the turtle too
