When did LSU baseball become a "top/elite program"

Obviously LSU baseball is a top (maybe the) program this year and all time. I am more a football fan and only make a few baseball games a year, but of course am a fan of the program and team. For those of you who know better, when did LSU become a top/elite baseball program? I know this has a ton of subjectivity to it, but like to hear from others.

When we won 5/10 championships in the 90's

Late 80's is when I would say they became elite.
I started going to games in 85 and did not stop until the late 90's. It was damn fun watching it grow under Skip Bertman from day one.

Program of the 90s for sure. Last decade saw 1 championship and a few non post season years. If you dont even make the post season its hard to consider yourself elite. We are still a great program but we lack the consistency.

LSU was probably the most talented team in the country in 1986, and if they had kept Joey Belle on the team, probably would have been the best team in the CWS in 1987.
But the moment that really put LSU on the map was the doubleheader victory over Texas A&M at the College Station regional on May 28, 1989, thus advancing to the CWS for the 3rd time in 4 years.
For whatever reason, LSU did not win the CWS in '89 or '90, but LSU did take the first of 4 consecutive SEC titles in 1990, and started a long trend of hosting regionals at home.

almost 30% of the national championships in the last 20 years is not consistent?

You expect Omaha every year? You do realize we play in the SEC right?

In 1984 we hired the greatest coach named Skip. Took us to 1st CWS in 1986 and the rest is history.

I like Doc Fenton's post, and so based on these posts are we the Florida of SEC football? won nothing until 1990's but a dominant program since? NOT saying this is bad thing, but sounds similar?

not to take anything away from the teams in the 90s they where some of the best teams ever to play baseball, but with the ever growing competition in college baseball, it would be amazing if we had 15 appearances and 6 titles in the next 25 years. If this happened I think we would be considered the top baseball program of all time. No one would doubt that we are if this happened.
