Big lake star tourney brain fart

Friday morning a guy in big lake catches a 31inch trout at 7 in the morning. They ran to the launch to weigh the fish for the star obviously.(7 something was leading as of Friday.) He puts the fish in a wiegh in bag alive and lets his very young son carry the bag to the weigh master to weigh the fish. Upon getting out of the boat the kid trips and the bag that turned out to be half rotten anyway breaks open, the fish bounces one time on the dock and then goes in the water. Needless to say the mood was rather tense. Unbelievable.
My question is why would you let your kid take that $30,000+ fish to the weigh in so close to the water knowing what you could possibly happen?

I love TigerDeacon Jr. and will do anything for him, but I would knock that sucker down if he tried to carry my $30k fish.

Do you have to keep the fish alive for the STAR?

Happened at the Legend of Lake Fork Tournament this year too. Dry rotted bag. Guy had a 2.8lb bass bounce off the dock and back into the water, and 2.65lb under won a $45k Legend bass boat.

sounds like dad has some blame here too. The stories they will tell from now on may be worth more than the $30K

If I caught a 31" trout for STAR, you can bet your sweet arse I would have trailered my boat & got the fish out of the live well from the parking lot.
Last year I fished a tournament in Jacksonville Florida. 1 team got on some studs early & headed back in to the dock @ 10AM. They sat there until 3PM. When the weigh-in started they got a weigh bag & put their fish in the bag. As they were getting out of the boat, one of their fish (an 8 lber)decided that he didn't particularly like the confines of that weigh bag & jumped out of the bag right into the water. These guys would have been in 1st place by over 3 lbs going into day 2 of the tournament.
After seeing this happen, I am always extra cautious when taking fish to the scales.

Stuff like that apparently happens pretty routinely, as other posters have stories. I gotta buddy that lost a 2.5 fish the same way, but it was a fruit jar tournament. Probably cost him a couple hundred bucks, but still.
I'm with the "trailer the boat" guy. If I thought I had a 30,000 fish on me, I for sure would have gill tied that bad boy some kinda way or something.

I am annal about people getting fish out of the live well. I usually do it myself unless I am fishing with someone who I know thinks like I do.
I have seen fish jump out of the live well and back into the water.

I can imagine the mood was something akin to seeing a turd in the bath tub.

I don't think they are required to be alive, but I could be wrong.

No, they don't have to be alive. Only green trout fishermen would be dumb enough to do that. Kill the damn fish so you don't lose it and let it swim away.
