Would it be a waste of time to merely soak them for 12 hours...would they take in that short of time?

Sullivan's soaks pineapple in vodka for 2 weeks for their knock out martini

Are you trying to get the fruit to soak up alcohol or to get the alcohol to taste like the fruit?

Too late now, but I was looking for alcohol laced chunks of fruit.

I soak apples, pears and peaches in rum and Cointreau with a vanilla and cinnamon for about 8hrs and it always tastes great. I spoon it into the wine glass before adding my red wine (which is chilled in a pitcher with orange, lemon and lime slices for the same period). It's how I do my sangria - top with a splash of sprite.

12 hours would be more than enough to flavor cut fruit.
