There are various websites out there for this. I believe bankrate.com has a section on this but I don't know how good they are.

So long as you know how to use them properly, credit cards are awesome. I like the fact that you can download your daily transactions into your financial software of choice. Plus every now and then they hand out interest-free teaser rates in addition to things like cash back freebies, airline miles, etc.

You seem like you genuinely intend to pay it off at the end of every month, if that's the case I'd recommend an American Express. Either the green card or the white Zync card. With the zync you can customize your points. There is no interest rate so long as you keep it paid off.

I don't plan on using it that much except for gas and groceries here and there.

Amex Blue Cash or Amex Blue Cash Preferred if you are going to put any substantial amount on it. For instance, if you put only 2500 dollars in gas on it, you would have already had the fees paid back with excess rewards, and everything from that point on would be gravy.

If you want miles or points, pick your airline or hotel and then sign up for the AMEX. If you want general miles, Capital One Venture is usually one of the best.

Google whatever card you want and apply online.

Sign up for Mint.com. It's a very powerful tool.

However, if you really want to see what you are doing, you should put everything on plastic.

+billion

Plus you get insurance on your purchases, if someone steals your wallet you don't actually lose anything, etc. etc. The list of benefits goes on and on. Try that with cash.

I agree, I put everything on a card.

Second the Amex blue cash preferred

75 dollar annual fee but I get
6% cash back on groceries
3% on gas and dept stores
1% on everything else

Blue cash everyday card is free but the cash back amounts are 3,2, and 1% instead

The preferred pays for itself easily in my house

Also, Amex has some of the best buyer protection perks

It's credited to your rewards account

You can use it to buy stuff on the Amex site or apply it to your bill in 25 dollar increments

I haven't touched mine and it's up to 450 dollars

Eta: If you are really considering it, email me at Croacka@gmail.com so I can refer you,

No VISA or MCs are recommended? I have a card with a credit union and there's no fees and no interest if you pay it off that months. It does the job

That's pretty epic. How did you manage that?

Flaming? Nice. I'm asking what the drawback is, since it's free for a responsible consumer.

I'll ignore the hypocrisy in you calling someone else out for flaming....

The drawback is that there are no points. Plenty of free cards give 1-3% cash back.

Sure the Amex has a fee, but with 6% back on gas, it would take a heavy driver 2-3 months of gas purchases to pay that back, all the while, getting 3% on groceries and 1% on everything else.

FTR, every credit card doesn't charge interest if you pay it off every month. That shouldn't be a selling point.

not saying that credit cards are evil, they can certainly be useful. bank of america, capital one, discover - you can apply online for any of those. they will all tell you what they offer. don't get any card that requires an annual fee, especially if you are only using this for monthly household purchases.

In the same sense that "you must utilize motor transportation in order to travel from New York to San Diego" is a myth.

Sure, some a-hole on a bike did it, but that doesn't mean that it's a practical means of doing so.

wrong. you don't need a credit card to establish credit - period. it's a complete myth. if you walk into a bank with enough cash to put 20% down on a house, a documented history of making all your utility/rent/cell phone/cable bills on time, the bank will BEG to give you a loan. And if they won't, then bank down the street will. "I can't loan you money, you don't have a credit card." <- MYTH
