I'm not sure if Germans and it turns out he was Canadian (not Scottish).

quote:

The actor, who died in July of 2005, left specific instructions in his will to distribute his remains beyond Earth's atmosphere. And on Tuesday, a small urn containing a portion of Doohan's ashes was successfully sent into orbit via SpaceX's unmanned Falcon 9 rocket, which took off from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

quote:

According to ABC News, the rocket was part of an in-space-for-profit burial business and contained the ashes of over 300 individuals. The capsule will remain in orbit for about a year before burning up as it attempts to make its return.

It turns out this sort of thing is surprisingly affordable:

quote:

A suborbital flight with a return to Earth starts at $1,000, the launch into Earth orbit is $3,000, and a trip to the Moon costs almost $10,000. If you really want to go where no man has gone before, a flight into deep space will run you almost $13,000.

abcnews including above quote

And some people probably already knew but "Scotty" was more than a little bit of a bad-arse between his military service and hijinks as a pilot:

quote:

Landed on Juno Beach on D-Day as a member of the Royal Canadian Artillery. Soon after, while walking across a mine field, he and his unit were attacked by enemy fire, as the Germans shot at them with machine guns. He was hit by four bullets to the leg, his middle finger of his right hand was shot off, and a bullet struck his chest. His life was saved when it hit a silver cigarette case which had been given to him by his brother.

imdb including D-Day in his bio

quote:

Doohan trained as a pilot (graduating from Air Observation Pilot Course 40 with 11 other Canadian artillery officers),[5] and flew Taylorcraft Auster Mark V aircraft for 666 (AOP) Squadron, RCAF, as a Royal Canadian Artillery officer in support of 1st Army Group Royal Canadian Artillery. All three Canadian (AOP) RCAF Squadrons were manned by Artillery Officer-pilots and accompanied by non-commissioned RCA and RCAF personnel serving as observers.[6][7]

Although never actually a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Doohan was once labelled the "craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Force." A story from his flying years tells of Doohan slaloming a plane – variously cited as a Hurricane or a jet trainer – between mountainside telegraph poles to prove it could be done, which earned him a serious reprimand. (The actual feat was performed in a Mark IV Auster on the Salisbury Plain north of RAF Andover in the late spring of 1945).

keep in mind the last bit was from wikipedia so I'm not sure if the pilot stuff is really true or evolving urban legend... there's a star trek link I added below which says he was called the craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Forces but does not describe the slaloming incident in particular.
