Best bang for your buck laptop

I wasn't sure if i should place this here or the OT, but i figured it would be answered in a more serious fashion here.
I'm looking to buy a laptop for MBA school as mine is one of the original apple laptops (2005) and is running on fumes (honestly have no idea how it lasted this long). Does anyone have any good suggestions/experiences with laptops or good websites that i can get a decent deal on? I plan on doing extensive excel, PP, etc on it and any user friendly suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you're willing wait, the new Macbook Pro iteration should be coming out soon and should be a pretty significant upgrade over the current version Link
Just run windows Parallels to use ppt or excel, or you can buy the Mac versions of both software (They suck though IMO)

Or look at Ultrabooks (ie HP Folio, or Samsung Series 9) may be more appropriate if you're bringing it to class every day

Depends on what features you need. I bought an Acer from Newegg last month and am really pleased with what I got for the money.
The following link is a good place to start. You can search based on the features you want. One thing I like about Newegg is that the people who buy there tend to be fairly tech savvy. I would look for a laptop that is one of the top sellers and gets good ratings.
Good starting point

Don't really consider Macbooks great bang for the buck for 90% of laptop users. They are nice, but you can do most PP, Excel, web browsing on a reliable, well performing computer for $400.00. Just don't bog it down with crap you don't need, and clean it up once a year.

Just wet from a 6 year old Mac to a Lenovo.
I want my Mac back. If I had a couple of years of school ahead of me, I would get another Mac.
You got 7 years out of your computer, I got 6. Most PC's give about 2 years of good service and then require some significant work.
That said: Excel for Mac sucks horribly, and it's my most used non-internet program.

I don't see how PCs only give people 2 years. I've had my Gateway 5, and it runs like new. I've given it two clean installs (one to upgrade to W7) which isn't out of the norm. My GF's Toshiba has lasted 7. It will hardly run anymore, but that's because she's never cleaned it up, and she refuses to remove any programs. She has like 96 processes going at idle. I'm not sure how it's made it this long.
But keeping a computer clean doesn't take a rocket scientist.
Macs are great, but you pay an unnecessary premium for the average user. If you are ok with that, go for it.

You know what I did to my Mac in 6 years.
Nothing, unless you count charging it.
Once you add in the cost of virus protetion, operating system upgrades, cleaning programs, etc. your $650 PC cost almost as much as a Mac.

You can buy programs like parallel, or run bootcamp to startup in Windows to use/access PC excel

None of those things costs a single cent.

I don't know anybody who pays for anti-virus that's under 40 years old. Avast! free for me, haven't ever had a virus. Windows 7 cost $30 for students at launch ($70 now).
For $400 you can get 4 GB ram and i3 processor which, imo, will handle most normal tasks on W7 without problems. And a clean install every couple of years doesn't seem worth $600. And clean installs are as useful on a PC as a Mac. That computer should last you +5 years.
I've never had a Mac, but once people get them, they all love them, so obviously they are great computers. But I don't want to dish out +$1,000 for web browsing, excel, and word. And whatever other codes and programming I need to do, I can use Windows without trouble. Admittedly, I'm not a code programmer, I just run the shite.

CCleaner is free. Microsoft security essentials is free. Malwarebytes (non-pro) is free. These programs take maybe 2 minutes to download. Win7 upgrade is about 130 if you don't have access via school or whatever.

I can't say enough good things about this line of laptops. I am an IT guy and we've bought everything you can imagine, HP, Samsung, Dell, Apple, IBM, Toshiba, etc. The HP Elitebook line is by FAR the best bang for the buck in my opinion. I have bought about 12-13 in the last 2 years and haven't had one problem.
