Wes: "There is 9.5 million reasons why I won't miss a regular season game" and today, he signed his franchise tender worth $9.5 million dollars.

I think negotiations would go a lot smoother if Brees were to say if push comes to shove, I'll sign the franchise tender, make my $18 million and play this season. I understand his reasons for not doing this, but like Brees, Welker could blow out a knee and be done also. What say you?

I would not advise him to say such a tactical blunder.

i don't think there was/is any chance that welker would make more than 9.5 million a year

Bc whatever deal Wes gets its not going to be worth a top 5 WR salary so playing a 1 year tender while lacking longterm security not that bad for him.

Also Drew has a thing called leverage and has a lot of it compared to Welker who has none.

Because that is giving up all leverage for signing a long term deal now. Brees would be stupid to say that.

We have an offer to make him (Brees) the highest paid player in the NFL and (I believe) the highest paid player in NFL history. Sign the damn contract.

but if he blows out a knee, he is basically done and has nothing but that $9.5. A long term deal with signing bonus and some sort of security is likely a lot more desirable for Welker. Isn't Welker also giving up leverage?

And Welker didn't write some Bible-thumping book about how great of a citizen of Boston he is, etc.

Payton and Brees love to talk about how great they are and get Saints fans to cough up an extra $25 for their mediocre books, but then they A) refuse to sign a contract that would make them the highest paid player in the NFL and B) move their entire family to Dallas.

So all that and you want Drew to follow in his footsteps?

Wes Welker isn't working on a long term deal that has 63 million plus guaranteed monies.

Contact ain't worth shite wout guaranteed money and Lombardi bout 3 weeks said he heard Saints weren't guaranteeing as much as Mario Williams got from Buffalo.

Welker puts up great numbers as a receiver, but he also knows any chance he has at the Hall is directly tied with staying in NE and getting passes with Tom Brady.

Drew has already been hurt once on the franchise tag, why would he want to do that again?

Unlike Brees, Welker isn't a HOF QB in his prime

pretty sure mario's guarantee was 50 mill, i call bullshite cause i think the saints know they have to guarantee probably 60-65 at least.

I'm gonna dissect this whole lotta fail bit by bit.

Drew has done more for this city than anyone in a long time. Without Drew, the Saints are still irrelevant, and Reggie Bush is probably being overpaid just to sell tickets.

quote:

Payton and Brees love to talk about how great they are

Ehhhh. I didn't read that in their books, and while Payton does come off as an a-hole most of the time, most great coaches do. I see him in the Belichick mold of having a completely different personality than the media sees. Drew can talk about how great he is, because he's arguably the best QB in the NFL right now.

quote:

Those books weren't too bad. Its not like they were Twilight level grammar usage or anything.

quote:

Link? Oh, and incentives are for people coming off injuries or young talent trying to prove themselves. If I was Drew, I'd say frick incentives too.

Tom Brady lives in Cali... your point?

Brees is only in his prime for one or two more years, just like Brady is probably leaving his after this year.

Based only on age you are either shortchanging Drew or giving Brady an extra year or so.
