I'm sorry to start a new GoT thread, but I was scared to sift through the other GoT boards in case of spoilers.
I am 3 chapters into the first book as of today. My plan is to read then watch as I find it's much easier to stay interested in books if I don't know what's coming. I actually find it more interesting to watch a movie/show after I've read the book.
Anyway, my question:
How does the series play out in reference to the book? Is the first season the first book? Does it follow along pretty closely?
Any advice while reading? I'm very excited about binging through the series.
Sorry I'm late the join the hype. Thanks in advance for advice!

Follows the book pretty closely. Does that answer your question?

The first season is pretty damn close to a word for word adaptation of the first book.
The second season takes some liberties but is still fairly loyal to the second book and also mixes in some of the third book.
Every detail is important.

Pay attention to everyone's opinion of Rhaegar...

Pay close attention to the prolouge because the white walkers are very important quite early in the series. It isn't as if Martin teases the reader for five books without anything of importance happening regarding them.

Haha awesome thanks guys! I'm ready for some of the characters to tie together.
My main questions was wondering when I should start watching season 1, but apparently it's just the book on screen. I'll watch season 1 after I finish the first book.

I would read book one before watching season one, however, I would read books two and three before watching season two.

This is the exact sentence I needed to hear.

If you enjoy reading, def read before watching. The show is very good but do not compare to the books. Those who watch before reading are spoiling the superior story. There's so much more forshadowing, character development and understanding, and cool background that the books can provide that is just hard to get across on tv
Advice? Pay attention to dreams and profecies for major forshadowing

As far as keeping up with the different characters and houses, does this get easier as the story progresses? Kind of overwhelming so far.

yes. By the 3rd book all of the major houses have done something that makes them more than a foot note.

yes you start to get a grasp of where houses are located and who is allied to who.
Though don't be ashamed to use the glossary in the books.
