Finally finished watching it. Man, that was tough near the end. Gary Shandling, Doc Severinson getting all emotional. Then Bette Midler's final song on the final show with guests (his final show was a "clip" show).
I was all misty eyed and sad
but over the credits they played the funniest Carnac moment ever:
Answer: Sis Boom Bah
Question: Describe the sound a sheep makes when it explodes.
I remember that one as if it were yesterday. Johnny and Ed could barely finish the routine they were cracking up so badly.

Fairhope, that doesn't surprise me at all about Leno (not acknowledging Johnny in his debut). As if it needs to be established, I freaking hate Leno.

Yeah, it was such a slap in the face. It was also touched on in the HBO movie 'The Late Shift.'

I was too young to watch Carson (6 when he retired). The only reason I knew of him as a child was that scene in Home Alone. What made him so special?

His talent aside (much more talented than Leno, Letterman, or Conan), he was basically an American Icon. He averaged 15 million viewers a night, which is more than the current three hosts get combined.....and he did that for over 30 years. He was just a staple of everyday life for most Americans for three decades.

Finally finished this over the weekend. Awesome documentary on an exceptionally interesting man.
I never knew Carson was such a womanizer. Perhaps because I was too young to really pay attention to that kinda stuff back then. It doesn't surprise me though...Carson was a good looking dude and was almost always the funniest/coolest person in the room. Watching some of those clips on the doc, the women on the show loved him (or even lusted). I imagine that's a hard thing to turn down for someone like him in that position.
I never watched Carson religiously, but I can remember seeing the show here and there when I was a kid because my parents would watch it. Watching that doc was extremely interesting. Especially watching Leno talk as if he was some innocent pawn when it comes to Carson leaving the show.
Also, props to PBS for the whole no commercials thing...that's fricking awesome.

Did anyone else pick up on the round about way the documentary suggested Johnny checked out, instead of dying from his emphysema.

Explain what you mean...the doc very clearly said that smoking is basically what caused his death, and even touched on how he was basically disappointed in himself that it he directly caused it.

I agree - none of the other late nighters come close. I know she didn't cover it but Joan Rivers said in her E True Story that an NBC rep shared a list of potential replacements for Johnny and she was no where on the list. Her and her husband then started looking elsewhere as was also recommended by her NBC rep. friend
I know he felt betrayed, but I think she did the right thing for herself and he should have at least talked to her.

Side note - if any of you saw letterman the other night, Conan was a guest. They definitely agreed about Leno screwing both of them out of the tonight show. It was very interesting to watch...letterman kept Conan on for three segments. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Conan in Dave's seat when it's all said and done.

I think that the thing that made Carson so much better than the other late night talk show hosts is that he did a much better job with the interviews. He didn't steal his guests' spot light, he enhanced it. He was genuine with his guests, and when they were funny, he laughed loudest and longest.
He was secure enough in himself to not worry about being diminished by his guests. With Letterman, Leno, and Conan, it's mostly about them. With Carson, it was abvout the guests, and the audience was able to enjoy the guests by watching how naturally and symbiotically they were able to perform with Carson.

CBS absolutely was gunning for Leno. They had nothing for late night and was tired of giving up that time frame to NBC.
I would recommend "The Late Shift" book. Never saw the movie, but I would wager the book has a little more detail.
