I keep hearing on sports show that he's the "leader, the Drew Brees" of our defense, but they almost always fail to mention that we have a completely new defense that he doesn't know.

I'm not trying to totally discount losing his leadership abilities, but shite at this point I just want someone who can play middle linebacker who can shed a block.

Thoughts? Concerns? Breesus?

True, but he was the one responsible for making the calls. I don't think it's his leadership that will be missed as much as his instincts and knowledge. They've done a pretty good job of rebuilding the LB corps though.

Agree with this. He has a lot more knowledge than most at the position. He is able to make calls and line guys up correctly along with making audibles. Not saying we won't be fine, but his smarts will be missed.

Well he was the leader of the D, regaurdless of a new DC had he not been suspended he still would. Now we here hoping that Lofton can call plays/ audible be the leader that Vilma was.

I think he is without a doubt the spiritual leader of the defense and maybe is the player with the highest Football IQ on the d.

I kind of felt he was gone this year before the bounty shite even came down the shite tube. He looked old as hell last year. You can call the perfect play but if you are too small and too slow to make the play, it doesn't really matter.

The dropoff to dunbar was very very narrow.

I'd like to have his depth and stuff but I don't think it's that big of a blow.

So in summary, they are overplaying his value but not leadership.

No, I think his leadership qualities were the one thing we'd miss the most.

Teams lose defensive playcallers via trade or free agency all the time. These defenses don't just crumble up and die. In the NFL there's always someone wanting and ready to take over someone else's job. We've got some experienced LBs coming in so we'll be fine. There will be an adjustment period no doubt, but it will work out.

I think that, in general, it's going to be very difficult to replicate a 13-3 season missing our coach for the whole season, interim coach for half the season, and two significant Defensive players. But I would love to be proved wrong.

We'll have consistency on offense and defense for the most part with Pete and Spags. I have faith in Drew and Pete carrying out what Payton has put in place.

I guess it's just really up to Lofton or one of the other players on defense to take on that leadership role that Vilma had.

The thing is, even though Vilma reworked his contract and what not, I'm not sure he's a Spags type of linebacker. I could be wrong, but with the d-line having the task of getting up field, and not occupying blockers, our linebackers need to be sturdy-thumpers. That doesn't sound like Vilma, at least not at middle linebacker.

Casillas doesn't seem like a Spags type of linebacker either, but we shall see how he's used.

Exactly. Leadership is great an all, but if you can't shed guards, your time is up in this league.

If we had to lose a leader this year isn't a bad one for that. With a new DC and some new blood starting, someone may develop into a great leader. It sucks to lose him yes, but we'll be ok. I agree with pendulum, he looked old last year, I was kinda expecting him to lose some field time anyway, if not the starting job all together

Leadership in general is overrated IMO.

You never see a mediocre player called a leader
