What if Vilma "retires"

If Vilma was to file retirement paperwork could the NFL still keep him from being around the team (in a nonpaid role)? This would only make sense if he couldn't foresee being able to play in 2013.

I'm sure Vilma would want to play again. If he "retired" for this year, then came back, he would be suspended.
