where does social media come into play?

I'll admit I haven't read the entire story, but I thought I saw where twitter accounts were part of this and FB as well, and the business was driven by hits on web pages. Call it what you want, but the overall internet/social networking aspect has affected the media in a huge way.

when did Page2 on ESPN.com become "mainstream media" ?

So the websites of mainstream media entities (espn, cbs, abc, cnn, etc) are not considered part of their media offering?

Social media is sort of a catchall for internet media. Blogs, magazines, twitter timelines, facebook pages and the anonymity of the creators behind them.

they are just ways in which she communicated with people she scammed (and when i say she, i mean her whole little group of whomever was involved, including that indian guy and his brother)

yes it has decentralized the media in many respects and led to more news getting out faster

look at how fast stories break on the OT. we were discussing the trayvon martin stuff the night it happened, which was a week before the national news picked it up

i just kind of reject this internally

i consider social media programs/sites that are used to connect people socially

i think a blog can be part of the media or part of social networking...same with a twitter account

it's all about use, to em

The speed is awesome. Unfortunately though, it's led to lots of misinformation and very less than average "reporters" to say the least.

i think the problem is that "big media" is trying to compete on speed and end up cutting corners doing so, which can be bad

big media is constrained by the rules of big media, and in trying to compete has to REALLY stretch things to get info out

Exactly.

Les' whole "Have a Nice Day. I have a damn strong football team." speech never would have happened 15 years ago.

This is the huge problem, and why the media is becoming a joke.

The ESPN part of the story has nothing to do with social media, but the twitter and facebook parts have everything to do with social media. To me, that's a bigger part of the story.

Deadspin updated. I guess it's becoming more clear this Indian guy was the one writing the articles. Makes sense

what's awesome is how fast the world will give your info in situations like this

they have a pic of her high school yearbook

Phillips first met when Prasad was a senior in high school, and she was an eighth grader (and still in middle school). They started dating not long after, said our source.

It's why Mark Cuban had a Dallas Morning News blogger's press credential revoked a few years back. He was supposedly blogging from the locker room. Cell phone use in the locker rooms was banned in 2008 because of cameras. They would have been banned by now because of social media if that ban hadn't already been instituted.

Today it's even worse. Reporters were Tweeting from the hallway the other night when Stoudemire cut his hand. I imagine some left the locker room to Tweet. Because of the technology controlling the media is getting crazy.

USA Today article about Phillip's firing

There's more:

LINK

The link goes out from time to time, but it's a good link. I don't think the site can handle the traffic it has gotten today.

quote:

Long story short, I never got paid and lost my Twitter account to this scumbag. As seen above Sarah kept making up excuses as to why I wasn’t being paid yet continually. Months went on and I lost interest in retrieving my Twitter account until I realized something crucial. (Here is where the story gets interesting)

When I gave Sarah the Twitter account it had 2000 followers – after she got hired by ESPN it was now at about 50,000 followers. I emailed her and pretty much said – if you don’t pay me the $500 that you owe me, I will take back MY Twitter account that has accumulated over 50,000 followers. Pretty good investment for me considering 50, 000 Twitter followers is worth A LOT more than $500.

I read just about every story associated with this just now.

Pretty wild stuff.
