#32 - Who says we have to go with one player? I'm doing a compellation today.

(ETA: Uniform # Link)

Jabarie Greer

Tom Barrington - From the inaugural Saints team.

Vaughn Dunbar - Seriously, who didn't think this guy wasn't going to become a great RB after his first couple of games?!

Fred McAfee - Special teamer. Made the 2002 Pro Bowl and was All Pro that year. Now director of player programs for the Saints.

Ki-Jana Carter - considered one of the biggest busts in the NFL. Was here for two years. Had 29 attempts for 89 yards and 1 TD for us.

missed out but wanted a minor shout out to Mike Strachan at #33

Jimmy T is the only real #31 choice. His number was "retired" by the Saints. The NFL is trying to do away with this. I think that why you don't see any 31s from 1967 to 2001.

He did play in 1967, 130 carries for 390yds. They tried to load up on vets at the end of their careers (Hornung, Atkins, etc) and have a competitive team right out of the box rather than build with young guys. There was no free agency so it was a doomed plan from the start. If there had been though, I'm sure Mecom would have been the Dan Snyder of the day. They might have been in the playoffs after just a few years like Jax or Carolina then rather than taking 25 years to get it figured out how to build a team.

good call on WW, kinda unsung role player who had some seasons. 8.5yrs in NOLA, 179 catches

now-

TE coach at Shepherd University
---------------------

have to add a trivia question all full fledged whodats should have filed away...

Who was the first player ever drafted by the Saints?

I've ranted about how the Saints were doomed from before their start as a team because they traded away the overall #1 draft pick & more for a backup QB who couldn't even keep the starting job over Kilmer. Well add to that...

As an expansion team they got the #1 pick and the last pick of the 1st Rd as well. Who did they choose? Les Kelley a FB from Alabama. How bad was he? he couldn't even make it in the NFL as a bad RB. He never even got a carry. They tried converting him to a LB but he never did more than play special teams. After zero starts in 3 years he was out of football for good.

a #30 is why I mention him btw

today

and, er...

1 month to an actual friggin football game!

lagniappe: in the do-over draft machine...
instead of trading #1 overall for a backup QB the Saints could have drafted Steve Spurrier or Bob Griese (HOF) who went # 3-4 in that draft.
Instead of Kelley at #26 & Bo Burris #27 (1st pick of 2nd Rd) they could have had HOFers LB Willie Lanier or CB Lem Barney.

Did I miss a page? How could all-time Saints great #37 Tommy Myers be left off the list? 10 years in NFL, all with Saints, all pro safety in 1979.

In the 20s!

One of my favorite Saints who I can't believe we let go as soon as we did. #29 Sammy Knight.

An undrafted free agent signed in 1997. Played 6 years for the Saints with one Pro Bowl in 2001. He started 89 games, had 5 sacks and 28 interceptions with 4 TDs and 440 tackles for the Saints. Was elected to the Saints hall of Fame last year. Currently works with DBs at USC.

Career totals: 168 starts, 9 sacks, 42 interceptions with 4 TDs and 792 tackles.

Current Saint Chris Ivory
Went undrafted in the 2010 NFL draft. His breakout performance was against Tampa Bay in week 6 when he had 15 carries for 158 yards. In week 11 Ivory had another strong performance against the Seahawks when toted the rock for 99 yards on 23 carries which induced Pete Carroll to refer to him as "a freaking stud out there".

Also as Suntiger posted previously Mr. Sammy Knight

letting Knight walk was one of the worst moves of the Haslett era

He had 5 seasons left in the tank after that- 79 starts, 344 tackles, 4 sacks, and 14 interceptions after he departed NOLA

Unfortunately for Sammy, he only had 3 ints and no sacks for the Dolphins in 2003. This is probably due to change of system or change in venue but his role was best in New Orleans.

double feature

4 weeks to an actual game... that's right not a bounty hearing, not a contract deadline, real (kinda) football.

Mean Gene Atkins

Gene Reynard Atkins (born November 22, 1964 in Tallahassee, Florida) is a former American football safety in the National Football League who played for the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins from 1987 to 1996. He is the father of Geno Atkins, American football defensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals. He was featured on HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel in a story about former football players who are suffering from head injuries that happened during their playing time. In the story, it is revealed that Atkins is suffering from the early stages of dementia, with the theory that his condition is due to brain injury caused by concussions while playing football.

Here's how deficient the Saints have been in talent... Malcolm Jenkins in 3 yrs and potential gets the nod...

One of the greatest Saints of all time.

DEUCE

quote:

Deuce was a standout athlete at Morton High School, lettering in track, basketball and football. He not only focused on sports while attending Morton, but also academics. Deuce was an Honor Roll student from K-12th grade. He graduated 5th in his class and served as Student Body President his senior year. He has said that his fondest memory from high school was being able to sing with his high school show choir at Carneige Hall in New York City.
After high school, Deuce attended the University of Mississippi. He had a record-breaking career for the Rebels. McAllister is the only player in the history of Ole Miss to record three seasons with at least 1,000 all-purpose yards. In 1999, Deuce won the Conerly Trophy which is awarded to the top collegiate football player. He finished his college career at Ole Miss with records for carries (616), yards (3,060), rushing TDs (36), total touchdowns (41), points (246), and 100-yard games (13). Deuce majored in Criminal Justice. During the summer before his senior season, while Ole Miss and the state was campaigning him for the Hesiman, Deuce decided to study abroad in Costa Rica.
In April of 2001, Deuce was the 23rd over-all pick for the New Orleans Saints. Deuce went on to rush for over 1,000 yards in three straight seasons (a first in Saints history). He was the first Saint running back with 22 100-yard games, including franchise-record nine straight contests in 2003. McAllister threw a touchdown pass on December 9, 2001 vs. the Atlanta Falcons. In 2003, he finished second in the NFC in rushing and fourth in the league with a career-high 1,641 yards on 351 carries which is second in club history. Including the 516 yards on a career-high 69 receptions, McAllister posted 2,157 yards that season to set a club record and rank second in the NFC. All of these accomplishments were an encore to 2002, when in his first year as a starter he led the conference with 1,388 rushing yards, scored 16 TDS and was voted to the Pro Bowl. He was also voted to the Pro Bowl in 2003. In Deuce first-ever playoff start he rushed for 143 yards on 21 carries with one touchdown and had four catches for 20 yards and another touchdown as New Orleans defeated Philadelphia, 27-24 to earn its first-ever NFC Championship Game appearance in the team’s 40-year history. McAllister set the all-time rushing touchdown record for the New Orleans Saints with a score against the Green Bay Packers in November 24, 2008. Deuce holds the
all-time New Orleans Saints record for most career rushing yards (6,096) and touchdowns (55). Deuce retired from the NFL in January, 2010; however, he had to make history one final time. On January 15, 2010, he was re-signed by the Saints. On February 7, 2010 the New Orleans Saints won Super Bowl XLIV.
Deuce learned at an early age from his parents to always give back to others. In 2002, Deuce founded his Catch 22 Foundation. The Catch 22 Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the lives of under-privileged youth in the Gulf South Region. Since 2002, Deuce and his foundation have supported families in Mississippi and Louisiana by providing meals for families on Thanksgiving, providing a Christmas Shopping Adventure for children; providing countless educational trips through their Deuceday program; providing the means for youth to attend their Senior Prom; providing resources to families and schools after Katrina; sponsoring Summer Youth and After- School Programs; hosting youth football camps; taking groups to Saints, M-Braves, & Zephyrs ball games, just to name a few.
In 2010, Deuce received the Army Community Award for his dedication to the state of Mississippi and Louisiana. In 2011, Deuce and his Catch 22 Foundation partnered with Allstate Insurance. One of their key programs is touring the Gulf South Region and speaking to students about their ‘X the TXT’ program. ‘X the TXT’ is a program to stress the importance of students not to text while driving. Deuce and his foundation has also partnered with Southeast United Dairy Industry Association Incorporation to bring awareness to youth and parents about the importance of drinking milk and healthy eating.
Deuce is also part-owner of the King Edward Hotel project and part-owner of Mac & Bones miniature golf. As it is stated in the Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 661, which Deuce received July 2010, ‘Deuce is not only a hero to the New Orleans Saints and the Ole Miss Rebels football fans, but he symbolizes downtown economic development efforts in central Mississippi, has become the perfect citizen following his record-breaking professional football career, and is to be commended for bringing honor to his university, his community and to the State of Mississippi.’
“It has been a long road for the kid from Ludlow, but I just tried to do it right the right way every time. I left a trail that any kid in America can travel as long as they know there are trials and tribulations along the way. Joy will finally come, just be humble when it does.” Deuce McAllister

DEUCE

I remember watching the draft and thinking, "Didn't we just give up all of our draft picks two years ago for Ricky Williams?" I did remember Ole Miss trying to make a "22 for Hiesman" campaign for Deuce and remembered that he was their go to guy for everything. I remember not liking him much either because he was from Ole Miss, but I was going to give him a chance although I thought he would be the NFL version of Kevin Faulk (3rd down back/PR/KR). WRONG. Fast forward and he's definently one of my favorite Saints of all time.
I remember being at the game when he broke the record for most touchdowns. Awesome!

In the Louisiana Sports and Saints Hall of Fame. Was in the 2002 & 2003 Pro Bowl.
