You can have internet from cox without cable tv? I never knew that.

You sure can....I have been doing it for years. The best part is you still get the basic tv channels for free! The internet comes in thru the same cable as the tv channels so they have no way to stop you form getting those. Between free basic cable and your roku with Hulu, Netflix, Epix, Crackle, etc. you will be just fine!

Check out the HULU website for a list of TV shows they show. www.hulu.com

If you guys have Netflix and Hulu and don't use instantwatcher.com you are REALLY missing out! It is absolutely essential!

If you have a Roku and a PC anywhere in the house you can also use PlayOn and get Nickelodeon, ESPN, MTV, etc all on your Roku.

my biggest questions are: will i be able to see the sports programs i want, and still be able to get the shows the kids (nick jr., disney jr., cn) like to watch

I'd like to know that too. A lot of what we watch is kids based programs and channels. With 4 kids, we need something for their entertainment more so than for ours.

I know this is hopeless, but I'll ask anyway:

Does anyone know of a way to watch TCM online?

I gave up cable TV a year ago and TCM is the only thing I miss about it.

I seriously doubt this is normal. may just be a glitch with you.
You can't tell me that if i get just the internet with COX, which i'm about to do, i will also get their basic cable channels for free b/c they aren't smart enough to stop it from coming through the line.

I gave up cable when I moved to NYC. Haven't had a problem, but like you said, it isn't football season yet.

I plan on going to games, going to bars and going to friends to watch what I really want to see live or on a TV. If all of those fail, I will just watch on my computer via the sites already mentioned.

I am strongly considering this too.
I have wi-fi on one of my TVs and the Netflix and Amazon subscriptions. I believe I need to get Roku for Hulu Plus (to watch network shows) as well as the other offerings Roku provides that my built in wi-fi TV doesn't already offer access to. However, if i can get basic cable with my internet through Cox, then then I don't think I need Hulu. I do want to keep HBO. How do you get HBO Go without a subscription through a provider like Cox or an XBOx?

Still learning about Roku. Do you need one for each TV?

What internet speed is recommended? I currently use the Internet Preferred @ $53.00/month 18 Mbps

Someone needs to create a 'How To' guide for getting rid of cable TV and going purely streaming TV.

re: Cancelling cable and going with a Roku & Hulu Plus

I did this last month. Cancelled Cox cable, but kept Internet with them. Bought Roku Xs and mohu leaf antenna. Saving $150 a month. Best thing I ever did. We pay $7.99 for hulu, use parent's password to get Hbogo for free, use sister's password to get netflix for free, and we already had amazon prime anyway.
We dont miss anything we want to watch at all. Most major sporting events come on broadcast and we have the hd antenna.

You can't get Hbogo without someone paying for hbo btw. Do your parents get it? relative or friend? Just get their password once and log in. they'll be able to still use it too.

I really don't miss cable at all. I just can't believe I didn't do it sooner.

re: Cancelling cable and going with a Roku & Hulu Plus

I actually just turned my satellite off yesterday. I've got Amazon Prime for when I get bored enough to watch something and I'll just get Netflix back if I ever run out of stuff to watch on there. I also have Google TV hooked up so I can get stuff through there too if I want. For football, I'll probably just get an antenna when the time comes and either go to a buddy's place or a restaurant or something for the games on cable that I really want to see. OTA HD is better than the compressed signal you get from cable/satellite providers anyway.

ive been looking in to this and Roku sounds very limited. Im looking to hack a device with xbmc. im hoping this is not the case but it looks like apple tv is this best device to do this on. i really hope i do not have to buy one of those.

No, you cannot get HBOgo without a cable subscription, BUT you don't have to be the one paying for the subscription. You must know someone with HBO, just log in once with their password and you're good.
Learned this when sister came to visit and logged into her netflix account to watch movies. She went back home to Austin and lo and behold we still have netflix.
