Great band but I don't think they have done much to influence music on the last 25 years, in fact I'd say rock of the last 25 years was made in protest against the Metallica's of the world. So maybe in that regard they are important. Is that what you mean?

I was thinking more of what kind of "rock" was prevalent in the time they started out. It was all glitz and hair metal and they came out with Kill 'Em All and just punched you in the face with fast tempo, melodic rock. They kept it up with Ride the Lightning and then Master of Puppets was a masterpiece IMO, dark and really something no one had done before. Then "One" was a song that was probably 20 years before it's time.

I agree 100%, Metallica is and always will be one of my favorite bands. In fact Death Magnetic is getting more play on my Ipod than just about anything right now. Great record if you havent heard it.

Not one of my favorites, but I'll listen to them, and I'll always respect them because I hear their influence in a lot of the rock I listen to.

GREAT album. I was not too big a fan of St. Anger, so this one really redeemed them for me. St. Anger just didn't sound like Metallica to me, but Death Magnetic was undoubtedly Metallica.

25 years goes back to 87.

Mid 80's you had some of the most important rock albums of all time.

Kill em All
Ride the Lightning

Then you have the time mentioned:

Master of Puppets
. . .and Justice for All
Black Album

These albums shaped rock for the next couple of decades. Even the fact that some music was a reaction to their music EMPHASIZES how important they were.

Couldn't have said it better.

Like them or not, they began a new movement for rock and the effects are still strongly felt today, nearly 30 years after their first album.

St Anger wasn't very good IMO. Death Magnetci takes you back tto RtL and MoP. All Nightmare Long has one of the greatest vocal hooks in all of rock n roll.

I also want to stress that I am not a big Metallica fan.

I just recognize what they did.

Made me very wary about the new bassist. I hated him for a while

Me either, anymore. I'll listen but I'm not a huge fan. I don't even have them on my iPhone

I used to listen all the time when I first started playing guitar, but not anymore. It's still undeniable the influence they had/still have on rock music

99% of Metallica is in standard tuning no? Seems like rock of the last 25 years is all in dropped D. Something to think about.
