Payton, Vitt, Loomis & Saints to appeal suspensions

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton will appeal his season-long suspension Friday, according to a league source.
Payton and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams were disciplined by the league for a "bounty" program that the team ran from 2009 to 2011. Williams, who was suspended indefinitely by the league, will not appeal, according to a league source. Assistant coach Joe Vitt, who received a six-game suspension, will appeal, according to a statement issued by his attorney, David Cornwell. Cornwell would not comment to NFL.com's Steve Wyche on whether they are trying to get Vitt's suspension overturned or reduced.
The Saints, fined $500,000 and docked two second-round draft picks, and general manager Mickey Loomis also are appealing their punishments separately to the league, Saints vice president Greg Bensel said Friday. Bensel confirmed "that the team and Mickey Loomis albeit separately have respectfully filed an appeal with the league." Loomis was suspended for the first eight games of the season, while the Saints were fined $500,000 and they lost second-round picks in 2012 and 2013.
Williams reached his decision not to appeal after mulling his options and discussing it with confidants. His status will be reviewed by Commissioner Roger Goodell at the end of the 2012 season.

Payton has said another advantage to an appeal is that it would give him the opportunity for another face-to-face meeting with Goodell, in order to clarify the terms of his suspension. Goodell said Monday that while Payton definitely cannot "coach from home," he would not necessarily be banned from all contact with the team.
ESPN story
Yasinskas is skeptical, ho-hum:

The appeal might be a very short-sighted move because it basically erases the previous statements by Payton that he’s sorry for what happened. The appeal could send a message to Goodell that Payton is not contrite after all.

Tie goes to the rabbit. Or something like that.

I choose to bump this because I didn't have to click to know what was up.
I bet they reduce it just so the parcells thing doesn't happen.

$5 bucks says its reduced

I agree it will be reduced. The NFL will call our Parcells bluff. I say we might still bring on Parcells for the first 8 games to serve as interim head coach/GM until both Payton and Loomis are back though.

Big media is hating this appeal. They can't believe he'd have the audacity to appeal....frick em all.

I always thought it was a given that he was going to appeal. Good luck coach, hope it works out for you.

It would make zero sense not to appeal.
It would be downright dumb not to appeal if this were a legal issue.

This I agree with. He's got nothing to lose, potentially a lot to gain, including $$$. I'm certain Goodell expected him to appeal.

Yea if people can't understand why we would appeal then they're either stupid or extremely butt hurt.....or both.

Yeah thats right
Just take somebody screwing you out of 5.8 million and a chance at coaching a great team you built from scratch whose window, at a Suberbowl run, is supposedly or maybe getting closer to its end.
Just take it and dont ask any questions. Especially in todays society where everybody always takes responsibility for their actions and never tries to shift blame.
Yasinskas = playing it up to get other teams fans to read his blog so he can show off his web analytics at the ESPN meetings
Hey Pat, Sean Payton says " Ya Sins Can Kis my a.."

Joe Vitt is appealing also, according to Adam Schefter.

Payton: I've appealed now show me your evidence.
Goodell: Um, there really isn't anything concrete.
Payton: Remove the suspension and pay me a bonus or I sue.
Headline the next day:
Payton receives bounty for taking out Goodell.
Now get off our field!
