Semi good news: the misconception that’s out there about April 1 involves general manager Mickey Loomis. He’s going to be suspended for the first eight games of the season and a lot of people are incorrectly assuming that Loomis’ suspension also begins April 1. That’s not the case. Loomis will be able to continue in his duties. He’ll have time to work a long-term deal with quarterback Drew Brees, perhaps sign some more free agents and conduct a draft (although the Saints will be without picks in the first and second rounds).

Loomis will also have time to sign his draft picks. He’ll be allowed to work right through training camp. His suspension won’t start until all teams have to trim their rosters to 53 players just before the start of the regular season.

ust before the start of the regular season.

Thank God. Coaches and players have complete control beyond that point. Its not like Mickey has to hit the "recruiting trail" during the first 8 weeks of the season or anything. I think the fact that this happened now gives the Saints PLENTY of time to get familiarity with the situation. If this came down in June or July it could be earth shattering

I misunderstood the way it worked until I saw this. I feel much better about the draft, and constructing the roster, knowing that Loomis will be working his magic. Undoubtedly, SP and Loomis already have their draft board mostly set up by now, and their FA strategy in place. I have faith that Loomis can get it done.

Who Dat!

Christ! Have any of you read any article at all regarding these suspensions? The timelines have been clear. I have not read anything that insinuated an April 1st date for Loomis' suspension.

There was a misconception outside of your own?

You're right. Everyone on the planet should already understand every facet of this 12 hour old story. Sorry for trying to help clarify what everyone already knew.

my apologies but why exactly is the GM suspended here?

quote:

Mr. Loomis became aware of the allegations regarding a bounty program no later than February 2010 when he was notified of the investigation into the allegations during a meeting with NFL Executive Vice President-Football Operations Ray Anderson. He was directed to ensure that any such program ceased immediately. By his own admission, Mr. Loomis did not do enough to determine if a pay-for-performance/bounty program existed or to end any such program that did exist.

14. Saints owner Tom Benson notified Mr. Loomis in January 2012 prior to the team’s participation in the playoffs that the league’s investigation had been reopened. Mr. Benson reiterated his position that a bounty program was unacceptable and instructed Mr. Loomis to ensure that if a bounty program existed at the Saints it would stop immediately. By his own admission, Mr. Loomis responded to this direction by making only cursory inquiries of Coaches Payton and Williams. He never issued instructions to end the bounty program to either the coaching staff or the players.

It's funny cause you can actually take Loomis' name out and insert Goodell's.
