I just read this too. I don't understand why it is necessary when there is a federal repository that provides feathers and carcasses for religious purposes.

That, and they taste like owl.

They are a simple people, they speak with the earth, sky and water.

Sets a bad precedent, but it was originally their land and bald eagles aren't endangered any more. If they keep it to a minimum, then I'm okay with it.

Don't think I have a problem, unless, of course they start doin this on the reg.

I guess this is like burning a flag. If you perform the act in the right way I am OK with it.

I'd kill one or two up in Alaska if I could. They are everywhere...like vultures.
BTW, I saw 3 of them now on the nest at I-10 and 310 on Friday.

What is the right way to burn a flag?

What does that matter?
Every group in human history has been affected by war, migration, technology, whatever. What makes Native Americans/Indians any different? Not like I've got a right to Scotland.

Too soon man, too soon.

"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning"
Thanks Cade, I was away from my desk for a while and didn't know that link was needed.

Natives have rights that most of us don't when it comes to the outdoors. They can hunt seals here, and can subsistence hunt and fish. I think it's pretty silly, everyone else has been forced to change with the times when it comes to hunting and fishing regulations.

What's silly is they will probably use a gun to kill this bird for feathers for "traditional ceremonies".

Video tape it while watching the Cubs play via satellite TV. One of the problems with the "native community" is they still live straddling two worlds. Time to move into the modern one.

Benjamin Franklin on the Bald Eagle as a national symbol, fwiw...
quote:
"For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.
"With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country...
"I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America... He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."

Bald Eagles are actually less than impressive hunters. They much prefer carrion and salvaging the meat that something else did the work for. Watching them fly is still a thing of beauty however particularly if they can't find anything dead and and actually work.

I agree. They used to nest in Orange Grove near Houma every year, and I got to see them there. Very pretty on tree top too.
But a couple did get killed on the highway pecking at roadkill.

Maybe he is a perfect symbol for this country.
