Will this be worth it in the long run?

I am in education right now. Salary is okay, but won't be able to keep up with students 10 yrs down the road.

Looking into a program that will cost about 35,000. I'd be going part time.

What's you specific career goals?
How will an MBA help you accomplish this goal?

If you can't answer these two questions, I would take that $30k and go buy a new boat instead.

Also, are you willing to massively increase your work hours?

MBA salaries are high because graduates put in a boatload of hours.

I guess its all relative to your experience and current salary. Fresh grad MBA's with no experience in my area of the country are starting at $65K. Most are struggling to find work. Those with management/professional experience often reach six figures.

One thing is certain and its that tuition will keep going up. That $35,000 MBA will be a $40,000 MBA in just a few years. I'm only a year away from finishing my MBA and the tuition will be raised another 15-20% percent next year.

You should look at an Exec. MBA program. The degree is the same and you keep working full time during the program. In the end the EMBA is often a smarter investment even with higher tuition fees when one considers income lost, higher priced health benefits, etc.

I think setting a present value budget for your MBA is a mistake. Generally speaking, the higher rated the program, the more expensive, but the faster the payback and the greater the long term gain in salary. Go to the best school you can get into.

What program? What do you want to do when you get out?

If you want to stay at your current job and you need an MBA to move up, do an EMBA and let them pay for it. If you're trying to make a career move its much harder. If you're trying to switch careers its almost impossible.

I don't really have a career goal, but just know that I cannot keep teaching. Hours aren't what they appear, Pay is around 40k, and the kids are a little much at times.

I am looking into MBA, because there are so many options. A lot of the different fields also look very interesting to me.

No matter where I get a job, it will probably pay more than teaching. I am currently looking into evening classes at UH while working.

It sounds like you may be choosing out of desperation instead of desire. I wouldn't make a massive investment in an MBA unless you had a transition from school to a new job concretely mapped out in advance.

I just know that an MBA will lead to a better job. With the current degree I have now theres not many options.

I am very interested in the fields that an MBA could lead to.

You're discounting the fact that you don't have crushing debt right now, though.

Whatever you decide, just completely and thoroughly research it first.

Thanks! I have talked to a few friends about it. I think it will be the smartest career move I can make. Teaching doesn't cut it on alot of different levels

I hear ya... from one teach to another. Can't currently decide if I want to move into administration or move out at the moment.

I weighed that option too, but I just don't think I want the stress that admins go through.

I dunno. I look at some of these fools and they definitely seem to clock in less hours and work than I do. My bigger problem is that I don't view public education as an honorable profession.

I just don't like dealing with parents or testing.

I can deal with testing. The parents can definitely suck.

If I leave, it will be for something concrete. My hobby is filmmaking, but I've been looking into other fields to pay the bills. Unfortunately, the fields where jobs and pay seem guaranteed are the ones that require full-time dedication to the program.

Good advice right here. I went back for mine and it didn't do squat for me. Luckily, I didn't have to pay a dime for it and my employer covered the cost. The only reason I decided to go after it was because I felt like it would give me a leg up towards advancing my career. Boy, was I wrong After I got the MBA, it didn't do shite for me pay wise or advancement wise. I've had my MBA for almost four years now and still waiting for it to pay off.

If I had to pay for it out of my own pocket, I wouldn't have done it.

Why do you do?

I am looking into it for a career change, not just to advance my current career

Value of an MBA is directly correlated to the school you attend.

I will not consider attending any MBA program outside of the Top 20 and realistically won't accept with any outside the top ~12 unless it is being covered via employment. The returns just don't exist past the top schools.
