If Sci-fi is your thing, then I think Ghost in the Shell or Cowboy Bebop would be a good place to start.

Cowboy Bebop is episodic by nature, with the overarching plot only being advanced every few episodes. However, it's still one of the best anime out there and I'd recommend it to everyone.

GitS is a little more convoluted story-wise, as there are two continuities in the series, but I'd recommend watching all of it in release order starting with the first movie.

If you want to include Mecha as part of the sci-fi genre, then I'd recommend Code Geass, Gurren Lagann, Macross (Robotech), and some of the older Gundam series. Also, even though it's incredibly polarizing, I feel like everyone should watch Neon Genesis Evangelion at least once.

For your fantasy fix, I'd take a look at Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood, Fate/Zero, Sword Art Online, and a lot of the Miyazaki films like Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, etc.

I think that should give you a good push off the ground. Hope you enjoy some of those!

If I wanted to start watching anime what series should I start with?

Sci-fi and fantasy are my current go to movie/book/tv show genres.

Death Note is a good anime to start with. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is also good.

It's been a little dead lately though

Although not surprising since summer's over and anyone who's in school is back into the swing of things

ETA: But we did almost triple the page count of the thread since I started posting at the beginning of the summer. I think it was still somewhere around page 13-16 when I first jumped in

I've been meaning to revisit, but I haven't for a while.

Can anyone recommend anything along the lines of Darker than Black? I watched everything that I could find of that title (Netflix and online). I dug the heck out of it!

Actually Cowboy Bebop doesn't appear to be too far off...

I wasn't aware there was an anime thread or otherwise I would have jumped in earlier.

My anime viewing got thrown all out of whack. But I started Genshiken with a friend. We're on episode 5 of season 2. A definite recommendation.

If you can stomach history, then I recommend Night Raid 1931. It's based on conflict between Japan and China leading up to WW2. It's a combination of Mission Impossible and X-Men, so it kinda similar to DtB.

US Trailer

It is on Netflix, but I do recommend watching it subbed because they did a lot of unique things in the Japanese version (made everyone speak the language of their character's country of origin leading to lol moments; main character has to speak Japanese, Chinese, French, German, and English).

Might check this out, just watched the trailer. It does have a bit of a DtB feel to it. Thanks!

Thanks for the recommendations.

I've seen a lot of the Miyazaki films and have really enjoyed them. But after doing some reading about Cowboy Bebop that sounds like where I will start.

Probably the best starting point for just about everyone looking to start.

Cool. Let me know what you think. Keep in mind that the story and setting is all based on real events.

Sounds like you and I have the same tastes. I like the old school animes a lot. Currently working through the old FotNS series.

Looks like Onizuka & Alien Friends in Space. Any idea on when it's airing?

Maybe I missed it, but does the OP honestly not have Avatar: The Last Airbender listed in any of those lists?
Absolutely terrible post.

Oh, and just because I saw it listed, Kaze No Stigma was watchable, but felt like a bad ripoff of Avatar. It would have been much more enjoyable if not for the leading lady screaming obnoxiously every other scene. She honestly made the cartoon almost unwatchable for me.

Yea, I wasn't a huge fan of it. It seemed pretty generic as far as shows go.

And as for the OP, it was made a long arse time ago. I haven't updated it in forever.

Kaze no Stigma is 2 years older than Avatar.

And Avatar isn't anime.
