How can it be Detroit ball on that play when the whistle blew 3 or 4 times before any recovery was made by either team?

That play was a clusterfrick. It looked like an incomplete pass at normal speed and the ref blew his whistle.

Next thing I know it is Detroit ball. In the replay it looks like Brees is right in between pulling back and releasing forward. I think it could have been ruled incomplete or a fumble.

It should be moot. The whistle clearly blew before detroit picked upthe ball.

This. Immediate recovery by defense can be ruled-- awarding possession to the recovering team after a whistle blows.

I think the lions recoverer was being contacted by a saint so it probably wouldn't have been a TD.
