The "analysts" on BCS countdown made my head hurt with all the scenarios. Got me thinking which year was the biggest mess?

2004 was proof that preseason rankings matter

You could have come up with 50 scenarios just about every year but 2007 is the answer you are looking for.

2004 and it isn't close. An undefeated SEC Champ was held out of the National Championship Game.

2003 was correct. LSU and Oklahoma were obviously the top two teams in the nation. LSU, OU, Georgia, and Miami of Ohio would have beaten USC in 2003. USC played one ranked team all season and still managed to lose to an unranked, six loss team. No way did USC deserve even to sniff the NC Game.

not only did 2004 have 3 undefeated BCS teams, but it had 2 undefeated non-BCS teams

USC deserved a shot. They were top ranked going in from both polls and 2 games they had no control of cost them.

They were top ranked in both polls because they lost first.

They were ranked #1 in the human polls for two reasons:

They lost earlier in the season than LSU/OU (and were pre-season ranked higher than LSU)

and

To throw a wrench in the BCS, which was part of the AP agenda ever since the BCS rendered the AP virtually obsolete in naming a national champion.

Look at the talent and field results in 2003. LSU and OU were clearly the best and most deserving two teams.

2001 was the biggest mess.

2007 was the most opaque

2004 was the worst case scenario

2003 was awkward in the end but the reason the system exits.

USC was destroyed by a terrible Cal team the week before a very good Florida team beat LSU.

2001 was pretty bad with Nebraska getting blown out by CU and not winning the Big 12. CU had two losses but an impressive resume as the Big 12 was the best conference that year. Oregon had one loss in a pretty solid Pac 10.
