If you have to block a certain guy it can be hard to see where he went whenever 10 guys come running at you.

Remember a few short years ago when everyone bitched about the punt ugly formation? The Rantards be-otched about the 3 blockers lined up about 8 yds behind the LOS. Now just about every school does it.

The bitching about "Punt Ugly" was epic.

Question: when is the last time LSU got a punt blocked? It was definitely before "Punt Ugly"

Hairston was interviewed on the radio shortly after he committed. Said he can onside kick from a normal kickoff approach.

I admit I didn't like it - but my perspective was from playing center (in high school). I got the job because I was the only one on our team who could get the snap back 15 yards accurately.

But, I think I might subconsciously direct the ball to one of the closer guys. (Of course, I figured ALL centers would have the same non-existant 'problem.')

I am still amazed that it hasn't happened at least ONCE since so many teams are using that formationg now.

The goal of most kickoff return teams is to count certain positions, identify a specific person on the ko team and block that person (mainly with the front line blockers). By lining up in a "bunched" formation and releasing to your lanes it makes it harder for the opposing team to count/identify who to block.

Yeah - I like it - primarily because it will disguise an onside kick better. I see us using that in a surprise fashion sometime. I think this formation will increase the odds of recovery.

I was responding to the post about "punt-ugly."

s.t. uses the new formation to confuse the blocking assignments of the recv. team.

This, I heard it from Les' mouth.

Also, part of the reason for same jersey number on kickers is because you have one kicker who usually kicks it deep left, and the other to the right. Better chance the better return man for the opposing team will not be set up in the right position.

This is a version of the Bumerooski. We used this on my HS team in the Dark Ages. Direct snap to a blocker, who handed forward between the legs of a second blocker directly in front of him. Punter jumps and feigns a snap over his head, linemen ghost block and let everyone through, then most everyone runs right except the guy with the ball.

no...what you heard from Les' mouth was this:

We enjoy the assemblance of men and deployment in an fashion which epitomizes our degree of want to confound the quality opponent

but thanks for translating

As for the kicking formation, it was explained pretty well in a previous post. Most return teams have the front 6/7 guys assigned to a certain man on the kickoff coverage team. That man is not a specific player (I'm blocking TM7), rather than he is normally counted by starting with the man closest to the kicker and working out toward the sideline. By bunching the formation, the blockers do not know which players will end up in what position when the ball is kicked.

Nope. I definitely remember the Florida Gators blocking a kick in 2006 in the Swamp while we were using punt ugly. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Florida got their hand on a punt this year but the ball crossed the line of scrimmage and got a good bounce forward for about a 25/30 yard punt.
