Is it worth the time and hassle? I have several loans through sallie mae with various interest rates, but I honestly want to know what is out there. I really just need some advice on my options. What are some good banks and institutions to go through and what kind of rates should I expect right now?

Thanks

Yes, I did it recently. If you work public service there is a forgiveness program you can take advantage of after 10 years where they pay off whatever you have left over.

When I checked a couple of years ago, no one was doing consolidations...

I dropped my monthly payments significantly.

Don't use a bank.
Consolidate via direct lending.

What companies are people recommending? OR does the federal government link you up with providers? does Sallie Mae still do consildation?

If somebody has a PEL grant with a university and federal unsubsidized as well as federal subsidized loans, can they consilidate all the loans into one?

I'm still unclear as to where the best place to get a traditional student loan consolidation is. I see the studentaid.ed.gov site for direct consolidation which still separates out your loans into one providor.

Friend is a teacher and she told me this also. After so many years they will pay. Cant remember if she said all of it or just a percentage.

I think that is for the Federal Perkins loan only. I believe you have to work in the public field, medical field, or a government job to qualify.
