Realistically, how bad are the WVU fans?

The closer we get to the game/trip, the more I'm hearing from people to "be extra careful." I've been to every SEC stadium, and while every school has its share of idiots, I've never had any real problem.

Been/am looking forward to this trip for a while. Nothing said is going to change my plans, I'm just curious as to what to expect. Are the fans really that bad? Or is it more along the lines of LSU's flaming bags of piss tossed on missionary grandmas emerging from a tipped over porta potty?

more like this, try and stay away from students, as with any venue and youll be fine, the majority of the fans will be welcoming and will razz you a bit but nothing insane. there is always a jackass in every bunch though so i cant tell you not to expect running into one, although i would say its way more unlikely if you stay away from student areas, which would be the massive apartment complex off to the side of the stadium

Some are pretty bad, others are pretty cool. Like LSU and Louisiana, they have a lot of insecurity issues and "us against the world" mantra, but they take it a little farther. If you look down upon them they'll be rude back. If not, it will be okay. Like the SEC, OOC foes are treated a little different then the regular visitors.

They also drink a lot but are more likely to be the mean drunk than the charismatic, hilarious Louisiana drunk.

The hardcores love their 'Eers as much as anyone can love anything.

That's my broad brush. I've been to three games there so that's my little experience. Great place for college football.

I wouldn't be yelling any of that SEC SEC shite after the game.

I've been reading their boards for the last week, and many posters are worried about their fans. One said they have a chip on their shoulder because the SEC rejected their membership.

I've been there three times.

My first was when I was working for the Marshall Athletic Dept. As we were walking into the stadium (down the hill from the law school) my boss got pegged with a fully loaded hot dog. I didn't like him anyway.

Other than that I've seen two fights. Both were WVU on WVU. It's really not that bad and the whole thing is overblowin IMHO.

However, don't talk any shite because in my experience West Virginians as a whole are pretty sensitive.

both quotes are so, so true

It's a different kind of idiot up there.
When I say Alabama, AU or Tennessee....you say to yourself, "Damn, they are annoying."

When someone says WVU, I say, they don't even know how to be annoying, they go straight to emotionaly unstable......seriously.

Look, I've been there. I'll be there this weekend with my girlfriend and her family. Other than her they all went to WVU. They're great people.

But take that segment of our fanbase that embarrases you and double it from like 15% to 30%.

I'm just saying there is a certain segment of the crowd that won't have ticket and is there in Morgantown to party for the weekend. People from Logan, Elkins, the Elk River, South Charleston, etc. who don't have a future and to whom getting arrested is not a life changing event but a bi-annual occurance.

A friend who has been to big games at 40+ college stadiums all over the country (including WVU) was shocked to hear we're taking our kids to the WVU game. He said that while most fans are fine - the typical cussing or drunken rants you find many places - others have been known to go after you even if you don't provoke them. Wearing school colors and clapping for your team makes this wild strain of hillbillies CRAZY MAD.

His advice was no Tigerbaiting and no trash talk in the stands, even if you think it's all fun and games. Some just don't have a sense of humor about football games, and this game is among the biggest they've ever played. Furthermore, security ALWAYS takes the side of the WVU fans, regardless of the situation.

He said these crazy couch burners are like fans for the Philadelphia Eagles. As a point of reference for those not on the East Coast, my husband made the mistake of wearing a Redskins jersey to a game in Philly, and in return he had full beers thrown at him throughout the game, cigarettes flicked at him while he was in line for concessions, and people tried to trip him as he went up and down the steps to his seats. A guy who was a foot shorter than my husband keep spitting at his (my husband's) feet while they stood in line in the bathroom. The Philly fans were looking for fights anywhere they could find them.

I'm certainly not saying all WVU fans will be this way - I'm sure most are excited about the game and want to be good hosts - but if you run across someone looking to cause trouble, it's best not to take the bait or try to wise-crack your way through it. Just walk away, lock up your children, and celebrate in the privacy of your own car!

I wouldn't say borderline retarded. I'm a proud WVU fan and alumni and I don't consider myself retard. lol However, my wife may disagree on that. Most of our fans well welcome you and may do some trash talk. But the trash talk will be friendly conversation. I agree when they say stay away from the students. Some of our students can not control themselves when they drink so they could get out of hand. Yes, we have had instances before when people have been caught throwing stuff on the field and at people but no real problems lately since security and other things have been addressed. Like I said, the students can get rowdy but they are the typical college students. The rest of the fans should be fine. Yes, we have are a$$holes just like any other college has but you would have to be out looking for them or looking for trouble to find them. I have great faith that every LSU fan that comes to the game will enjoy themselves.
