Something a little different to consider

Brees is great and had a great game.
But, he made a mistake on the final drive that I've seen him make previously.
We were in no huddle offense due to the time. When you complete a pass over the middle with no timeouts left and that little time left, you have to spike it to stop the clock. It doesn't matter how good you are at running a play from the line (Brees is the best), you simply don't have that luxury.
The downs do not matter at that point. The only thing that mattered was time.
It cost us an extra play on that drive.

100% agree with you. The next play we ran was a pass to sproles down the middle. We clocked the next play with 3 seconds left. If we would have clocked the play before, we would have been on the 13? yard line with 15 seconds left. That is easily enough time for three shots to the endzone. Once again, 100% agree with you. This team will be fine.

I'm glad he didn't. How can it set up any better than from the 1 on the goal line on a pass interference call? We couldn't gain the 1 yard we need and that burned us bad twice in this game

Yeah I agree but man its the first game. If we had the damn two timeouts we blew...

That was the most informative comment I've seen you make about football...literally.
Honestly, you'd do better sticking with basketball.

I had a feeling burning those timeouts early was going to come back to bite us.

I agree that the team will be fine.
But, this is a mistake that I've seen Brees and Payton make before. This is basic clock management. If there is more time on the clock, maybe you don't spike it because you have the defense on its heels.
But, in this case you didn't have that luxury. You have to save every second because getting an extra play off can make the difference between winning and losing.

You're right. SP should release Drew Brees tonight. Don't let him board the plane with the rest of the team. Holy....

Seriously?
1st and goal with 8 seconds gives you two chances at the end zone instead of one.
I think it's worth discussing because I remember Brees and Payton making this mistake in the past. That means that they have not identified it as a problem.

No. But what do you want? In 1:14 he's got them on the doorstep of tying the game. Statistically, he bested Aaron Rogers. Drew Brees is the Saints and you find this little thing to nitpick? In the NFL, offenses are so advanced and can line-up quickly enough, that it's often seen as an advantage to keep the clock moving and the defense on their heels. There is offensive rythim in what Brees was doing.

I want to discuss the strategy that was employed vs. what I think is more sound strategy.
I don't want to cut Brees. I don't want to fire Payton.

Yeah, I mentioned that in this very thread. But, we didn't have that luxury IMO. If you want to keep the hurry up going and not huddle, then do it. But, saving every second is crucial in that situation.
Tonight, it almost didn't matter because Brees is so good. But an extra play would have helped.

I also thought that we shouldn't have been huddling on our 2nd to last drive. Again, having to score twice in under 3 minutes, you have to be willing to throw away a down in exchange for the time.

I agree.
Time = plays. Add to the fact we spike it or "clock stop" awesomely fast, 5 seconds added is much better than a "good look" short of the end zone.

I once heard a story about Jimmy Carter's Secretary of State Warren Christopher (before he was also Clinton's SOS). During the Iran hostage crisis, he tells an NSA officer that he wants the Army Rangers planing the assault on the embassy to aim to shot the guns out of the guards hands so as not to kill any Iranians. Well, your gripe about Brees reminds me of that story.

It's not a gripe.
For some reasons, me identifying mistake in strategy is hurting your feelings.

I agree with you, but some coaches feel that when you are moving the ball like that, you dont want to give the defense time to regroup.

This is the Rant. It's nothing but bitching and griping. To assume otherwise is lying to yourself.

Really, you tried to belittle my response by saying maybe my feelings are hurt? Well, I guess you got me there, moneyg. I'm crying over here wearing my Breesus jersey. Pathetic.
