Hall of Fame Speeches over the Top ?

Big moment for these guys. I understand that. Some came up from nothing. I understand that. There are sad stories to be told. Understood. What I'm afraid of is that some of these guys (mainly the ones still in media postions) are attempting something more than delivering their message. Ever since Michael Irvin's emotional and poignant address a few years ago, i detect that certain Hall of Famers are trying to top it. I enjoy listening to the stories of those non-media guys who plowed through during their careers. Marshall Faulk's speech was not that bad. But no one can tell me that Shannon Sharpe and Deion Sanders (both media guys on CBS and NFL Network) did not try to use their media skills to try and top or equal Irvin's speech. just make your point, but save me the dramatics. id on't mind hearing their stories, but i hate that it has become another production in their media acts.

you do only get in the Hall once, and maybe three or four players that enter the NFL this year will ever get there, so do your thing Deion

Look at who you are talking about. Shannon Sharp and Deion Sanders...did you expect anything less? They talked their entire careers. It's not like this came out of nowhere.
Deion's speech was pretty bad FTR.

i'd say that their personalities (the same ones that lend to over the top speeches) are the reason they are media members. i think the personality drives the speech, not if they are media members. that same persoanlity often dictates whether they have a successful post-playing media career.

You must not have watched the whole speech. I agree with the OP 100%. These guys have seen the dramatic speeches of past inductees and the annual flashbacks they get, and tried to top them.
It was obvious.
Sharpes speech was borderline ridiculous, except for the nods to Sterling.

If you watched Shannon Sharpe's road to canton show on NFLN, you'd know he wasn't bullshitting anyone with his emotional speech. Dude looked up to his brother, and his grandmother was his life.

i would say the same if i were in a coma the last 20 years and woke up and happened to hear his speech.
but have you followed football the last 2 decades? Yes, it was over the top, but that is just who he is.
Deion's speech sucked arse.

Shannon Sharpe's speech was very good. Deion's speech on the other hand was fricking horrible.

I was having a conversation about this the other day with a buddy. It's too "preachy." It's not that i don't respect what they've accomplished but I don't want to hear Deion on stage giving a speech about his childhood like he was in a Vietnam POW camp. He's been living the dream since he was in 18/in college.

They should not be able to speak after what I saw the other day. Or they have to have their speak approved before hand. Prime Time's speach was dumb as frick.
