I've been to Panchita's and, obviously, Superior. I want to try somewhere good that I haven't had. Lay it on me...

It's got good reviews. What are your thoughts on it?

I've been 2x. I like their enchiladas. It's "pricier" and "fancier" for a mexican joint but I like it.

ETA: I judge all Mexican places on their enchiladas.

Yea, that's kind of my go-to sometimes.

How pricey are we talking? I'm ballin' on a budget these days.

Their traditional tex mex fare is about evenly priced. You just don't get as much food as you would at a normal tex mex joint. They also have fancier tex mex inspired dishes.

My little sister and brother in law use to live in Austin and eat Mexican food religiously. They've tried a lot of places since they moved back down and has been underwhelmed. They found a little spot on Read Blvd(New Orleans East) that use to be a Brown's Donuts(I think) to be the best they've had down here. It's more of a hole in the wall type place.

The only sitdown Mexican in NOLA worth a damn is Panchitas. The others are awful. I'd literally eat a pile of Roman Candy donkey shite before I'd eat at Superior.

El Gato Negro in lakeview hasn't impressed me at all. Went one Saturday and were the first ones in and it took an hour for our food. Chips were over salted and did not seem fresh and the food was so so. I had strip fajitas that were very medicore, others at the table had filet burrito that was good and my wife had a chicken burrito that wasn't very good. My wife met a friend their last night and said they got a table quick, but an hour wait for the food after ordering. They had steak and shrimp quesdillas and she said they were really good, so I will give it one more chance.

juans isnt terrible.

if you can get out of the "mexican" mold and try some more Latin American flava go for La Macarena Pupusaria down by Cooter Browns. they specialize in central american food and allow BYOB with no corkage fee. It is small tho

WHAT?! Juan's is just as bad as Superior. Those frozen burritos you get at the gas station taste better than Juan's.

Macarena is completely average. But you pay $25 a person. It's worth the drive to Metry Kenner if you're going to Macarena. You'll get better food there at a fraction of the cost.

I've lost any respect for you that I had right here.

No, no, no, this is incorrect. Try something other than a burrito.

A true food critic isn't looking for respect. I'm just telling the truth, and the truth is Juan's makes Taco Tico's burrito taste like haute cuisine.
