re: Why is Tiger Stadium called Death Valley?Posted by TheDude321 on 6/17/11 at 7:50 pm to MC123
quote:
As for Clemson, the term "Death Valley" comes from the fact that Clemson University's Memorial Stadium is physically situated in a valley.
For what it's worth, so is LSU's Tiger Stadium, right below Victory Hill.
quote:
Furthermore, considering the university cemetery sits on a hill that once overlooked the field
This might be kind of true for LSU as well. For many years, the Indian mounds at the top of Victory Hill were thought to be burial mounds. There were some smaller-scale excavations in the late 1980s that failed to unearth any human remains, but no large-scale excavations have ever been performed, so it is unknown if there are any true traces of death at the top of the valley.

It was originally called Deaf Valley and it morphed into Death Valley or something like that.
I agree with this.
Yes. My parents were at LSU in the 50s and they remember it being called Deaf Valley. Why else would there have been a Deaf Valley Shell at the corner of HIghland and State? A typo on the sign?

I remember Deaf Valley Shell as well. It was the fall of '75 and they had full service. I don't know why everyone went stupid with this "Death" idea. Kind of depressing.

I remember it too. Of course, the name Deaf Valley would not be tolerated in today's politically correct world. Hearing Challenged Valley maybe?

feb. 23 1979 Paris texas:
TIGER CONDUCTOR — Louisiana State
basketball coach Dale Brown appears to have
rhythm enough to lead an orchestra as he goes
through his motions at a recent game in Baton
Rouge, La. With added fan support for the fifth
ranked Tigers Brown refers to the LSU arena as
"Deaf Valley" and no doubt needs all the motions
in the book. (wire photo of Brown and the team)
As I post before you will not find the name of deaf Valley while talking about Tiger Stadium, but time and time again you will find reference to the AC form 1979 on as Deaf Dome.

I don't care if I can find it in a book and I don't care how many times you post it, Tiger Stadium was called Deaf Valley.

Prove it.
I have proved it time and again even giving page, book and year Death Valley.
Yet by say so you say that is prove, I have a number of people I know that went to LSU in 1940's that say it was Death Valley, that isn't prove, as I have a number that said it was only Tiger Stadium at the same time.
Only when Marty's book comes out do many come out calling it Deaf Valley, yet I have board members that are 1950's LSU grads said it was death Valley.
That isn't prove, that is say so and a push, proof is finding an article with it called something other than Tiger Stadium, which I have posted before.

Wasn't Deaf Valley Shell there for many years before the PMAC was built? I had this conversation with my dad 30 or 40 years ago and he said people called TS Deaf Valley back in the day.

Kim my father went to LSU games in the 1930's and said it was called Death Valley in the 1940's and my grandmother also who went to LSU in the 1920's that does not make it so.
Deaf Valley is first used quess where? Death Valley Cal in the 1920's, and with a service station also and this is form newspaper articles.
So the placement of name is the same in Baton Rouge as in Cal.
Just a little research on names and newspapers answers many questions.

Hard to argue with someone who thinks Paris is in Texas. Everyone knows it's in Arkansas.

tigger1, I don't have the time or energy now to research, but I know that Deaf Valley Shell was there before the Assembly Center. I can't prove you wrong now. Hell, you may be right, but I don't think so.
re: Why is Tiger Stadium called Death Valley?Posted by tigger1 on 6/17/11 at 9:40 pm to Kim Jong Ir
kim no one said Deaf Valley Shell was not there before the AC.
Do not confuse facts.
I used to drive into Deaf Valley Shell long ago with my family, and at that time Tiger Stadium was called Death Valley and that is before 1970.
This at a time when John would come on the speaker before the game and say Welcome to Death Valley, and sometimes he would add USA.

Then why was it called Deaf Valley Shell?
re: Why is Tiger Stadium called Death Valley?Posted by tigger1 on 6/17/11 at 9:52 pm to Kim Jong Ir
Because the name association with Death Valley, just like in Cal there are many groups in the area of the Death Valley and near the area (like Van Nuys) with the Deaf Valley name.
Like the service station form the 1920's I posted above.
Death Valley became real popular in books and plays in the late 1920's and into the 1930's (then radio and movies) plays on the words were also common.
