How are they putting them out of business if they're buying from local vendors?
And according to your logic it would seem that buying from local vendors would put the guy on the corner out of business as well. What difference does it really make?

Not always. Sometimes a deal is actually a deal. WalMart also may be willing to lose some money on crawfish to get people in their stores.
And being overpriced is also not always an indication of quality.

And notiger, I'm just throwing out a hypothetical based on the price in the op and what I paid for live crawfish a month or so ago. I was unaware that Walmart even sold crawfish.
My point being is that I don't have any particular loyalty to some Cajun down south. He doesn't give me any money, therefore I don't feel obligated to give him money.

Who cares? If Ming Ling can get me live crawfish for $1.99 shipped all the way from China...Pierre should be able to do better that $2.79 coming from Eunice.
I care. I don't buy Chinese seafood for a variety of reasons and price has nothing to do with it nor does buying from Wal-Mark's. I'll either spend more money if I want them or do without, but I will not buy or eat Chinese seafood and I can and have been able to tell the difference in crawfish, before you ask.

When my neighbor asks for unreasonable prices for his goods, I will go with lower prices.

Bingo. As in all fields competition is good for the consumer. If Walmart crawfish are smaller and half dead they people wont buy them or wont buy them twice I should say. WalMart may very well be buying their crawfish from the same place as your "guy on the corner" and simply selling them cheaper.
That is why, as I originally posted, I was hoping to hear about an actual experience with live crawfish from Walmart.
Everyone is assuming things with nothing real to back it up.

The majority of the time your neighbor isn't asking for unreasonable prices. His costs are different from Walmart's for very obvious reasons. That's how Walmart works. How much of a price difference is there between Walmart crawfish and Bubba Boudreaux's corner stand crawfish? I don't know, but probably not enough of a difference for me to turn my back on the local guy who knows you by name.
