re: 48÷2(9+3) = ???????

quote:

48 divided by [2(9+3)]

or

48 divided by 2, multiplied by 9+3

Because there are no brackets present separating the equation into two halves, it seems like it should be read as the second option.

don't need brackets if its in the denom, brah

i only used them so that my point was clear

the issue is using the "divided by" sign in text. it creates a failure in language

Someone bump SFP's "average IQ of each board" thread. We need to re-evaluate the OT.

re: 48÷2(9+3) = ???????

The answer is 288, but it has nothing to do with going left to right like some of you have said.

M/D and A/S are equal operations, than can be done before or after. The only rule is 9+3, first.

so its 48 x 1/2 x 12 or 48 x 12 x 1/2

While your answer is true, left to right matters when division or subtraction is involved. For example in this problem, if you did 48/2, then times (9+3) you would get 288, but if you did 2*(9+3) and then 48/24 you would get 2. Thus, going from left to right matters when dealing with operations that are not commutative.

No, this is not correct. You can division or multiplication first, whichever you like. They are the same.

If you multiplied 12 x 1/2, before you multiplied 48 x 1/2 it makes no difference!

The only question is here is, does the equation read to divide by 2 or multiply by 2.

PEMDAS

----48/2(9+3) ---->P
9+3 = 11
---- 48/2(11) ---->MD
48/2 = 24
----24(11) ---->MD
24*11 = 264

264 is your answer

divide 48 by 2

that quotient is multiplied by 11

I say 288. I always thought you multiplied but I could be wrong. It has been about 15 years or so since my last algebro question.

Agreed.

Can we all agree that multiplication / division and addition / subtraction are the same process and can be done before or after each other and has nothing to do with reading left to right, it's freaking math!

Clearly, or this thread wouldn't have reached page 2.
