What's the average price per pound on a standing rib roast?

My mother-in-law requested that I smoke one for Christmas day. I went to the butcher shop yesterday, where they had one left with 4 bones. Pretty decent size slab of meat, but I didn't even notice the weight. Was still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor from the $90 bill I had. Is this normal? Did I get Choice or Prime?

$5.99/lb at albertson's if you spend $20. Bought one last night and it looks decent.

What was the size, and how many bones?

Around 6 lbs with 2 bones. I think it was $36.

Better be prime prime at that price. How did you not know? Drunk?

Alright, so I'll guess that mine was a 12 pounder, which is $7.50 a lb. Does this sound like a choice or prime rate?

Again, how did you not find out when buying it?
That might be choice. It's not prime.

Never bought this cut of meat before. Was shocked when the total came to that, but for some reason or another, paid for it anyways.

I hear you. I do that at whole foods all the time. Sticker shock.

Fresh Market has them for $6.99/lb

As far as not knowing what kind of meat it was, when I walked up to the counter, the tray of standing rib roasts was empty so I didn't look closer at any of the details on the sign like. The guy standing behind the counter asked if he could help me, and I asked him if he had any more in the back. He actually had one already sitting on the scale in front of me that I guess he was getting ready to put in the display. It looked about the same size as other meats I had smoked in the past for the same amount of people + leftovers, so I just told him to wrap that up for me. The last piece of meat that size I got was a cross rib roast and I think I paid $20 for a 12 pounder. I figured I'd get a $40 bill or something along those lines. Definitely not $90. That's why I was wondering if it might have been a higher grade.

Should have told him to stick that 12 lbs up his arse and went somewhere else.

i paid $10/lb for prime from a friend in the food business. i would imagine prime is probably $13-15/lb
just a guess tho.
cooking one now......i would not suggest smoking a standing rib roast.

What would you suggest? The common theme I've gotten so far is oil, salt, pepper & garlic.

Next time you go to that butcher, ask for the use of KY and a kiss afterwards.

you certainly could smoke it....just dont use too much wood.....
i season with dry rub, sear outside of the roast, cook in oven at 325 for 16 min/lb for center to be a little shy of medium rare......rare-med rare you could say.

Not a bad price at all, and I would bet it is Choice at best and maybe only select. What store did you buy it at?

Place is called Patton's Meat Market. It's in Duluth, GA.

What's the internal temperature you try to get to? I've got a wireless temp gauge that I use.
