We have one. If you are an experienced dog person that knows how to handle a working dog like a JRT they can be the best dogs in the world. They are one of the most rescued dogs out there. If you want one, get a rescue dog.

Ours loves our kids but will get testy. They are NOT apartment dogs. They need space to run and work. They like to hunt will kill small animals like rabbits, mice, rats etc. Mine loves to hunt opossum.

re: Jack Russel Terriers...likes and dislikes?

I adopted one that the vet said is around a year old. She is actually very laid back but once you go to play with her its non stop. She never chews or barks. My complaints would be that she digs, not to much though, sheds a lot and can't be around any other small dogs. The two small dogs she has been around she attaced viciously(going for the neck and shaking her head) if we hadn't been there she would have killed them. She's fine with bigger dogs though, we have a lab and they get along fine.

My female just made 3 years old last month and I wouldn't trade her for any dog. She is very hyper but well trained. Such a smart breed. She is stuburn as hell sometimes though. Very loving and sweet dog. Makes my wife and I laugh everyday. Great choice. You and your family will have a lot of fun with this type of dog. Youtube Jack Russel Terrier. They have some awesome videos of JR's

My sisters family has one. Very smart dog and probably needs to be entertained constantly to prevent him from going ape shite. My sisters is great with her kids. He does have some of the worst breath I have smelled on anything. I could smell it form under the table. Don't know if it is a breed issue or a bad dog maintenance issue. Overall I think they are pretty good.

re: Jack Russel Terriers...likes and dislikes?

We have one. extremely smart, MUST have a yard, very hyper, needs attention, kid friendly. She is a longhaired and doesn't shed much. My roommates and I adopted her in college. One wound up being deployed to Iraq and the other moved to NY, so I took her in. My wife and I still have her. At 9 years old she is still pretty damn fast and hyper. Current squirrel count is 2. It is hit or miss on what dogs she gets along with. She can get used to other dogs but if she passes one while we are walking, she is always down for a fight. Believe it or not, we have 2 cats and they get along great. Took a few weeks training, but it worked out.

Make sure yoiu choose a JRT with ample coloration, a predominantly white JRT is not a good indication for that breed

learn to spell the name if you get one.

its not big enough to deter breaking and entering.

its a VERY active dog, which requires a good sized yard to run in, at the least, and a LOT of human interaction.

Actually I am almost sure breed standard indicate they must be more than 50% white.

re: Jack Russel Terriers...likes and dislikes?

My parents have one, and they swear they won't have another one (even though they had to ransom her from kidnappers for $100 . . . but that's another story).

She bosses around my parents great dane and when she gets mad she looks like Jaws with all her teeth flashing. Very loyal and protective but they have very little impulse control. I read somewhere that they say it is rare for a jack russell to die of old age as they have a tendency to get themselves into trouble or dart out into traffic. They dig . . . A LOT. You won't have any moles in your yard. Make sure the tail isn't docked too much as you may need to reach into the hole and pull her out by her tail if they get onto something. Don't put this dog in an apartment or it will drive you crazy.

Also, my parents dog has a bad habit of "going for a ride with people". She will get in any car that stops and opens the door. The UPS guy has had to bring her back twice when she jumps out of the truck at his next stop.

Get a rat terrier instead. Similar as far as the good qualities, but alot more calm in general.

I highly recommend Rat Terriers. All the good of the Jack Russel, but half the hyper. I have a Rat Terrier, and my wife has had three in her lifetime. They can be nervous around other dogs (ie: shaky, run away; NOT aggressive/ bite), but they are not near as hyper as the Jack Russel variety. Still very smart, easy to train, great for squirrels, lap dog that isn't too small.
